READING
Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story
Enduring Understanding/Big Ideas:
- Like me, characters have many layers that make up who they are. As readers, we collect textual evidence to support our thoughts about characters and their many layers.
- Characters grow and change throughout a text. As a reader I need to track and monitor these shifts in order to enhance my understanding of a character.
- As a reader I need to zoom in on the characters’ motivations and struggles to identify the life lessons I am learning beside them.
- My understanding of text is enhanced when I build my thinking off of others’ thinking. I must be open to others’ views to see that texts can be interpreted in more than one way.
WRITING
The Arc of a Story
Enduring Understanding/Big Ideas:
- As a writer, I know that there are stories in everyday life, and I can develop these into text with complex characters, specific settings, and plot by using a story arc to plan my story.
- As a writer, I revise along the way, studying a multitude of mentor texts, and re-reading my writing through a variety of lenses.
- As a writer, I know that I must be able to create well-developed characters by crafting external actions, inner thoughts, and dialogue that drives the plot.
