🍂 The Afton Garden Cleanup 🍂

Hey, Afton Eagles! Do you have a garden at your house? Well, we do at Afton School and it's in our courtyard. In fact, this fall our 4th grade Girl Scout troop 2607 volunteered to clean up all the weeds to help keep the garden in good condition.
When we walked out into the garden it was full of weeds. We got out our tools and started to clean each plant bed, and ripped out the roots of the past plants. Many of them came out easily but some of them were almost impossible to get out! We had some help from our fellow teachers: Mrs. Hopkins, Mrs. Koch, Mrs. Foster, Mrs. Cramer and Mr. Kerchak. Also, our mom’s Mrs. Bryson, Mrs. Miller, and Mrs. Laderman who help with our troop came to watch and help us, too. Many of the plant beds were covered in weeds and all you could see was dried up weeds everywhere. We had a phenomenal time working together helping to clean up our special garden.
If you have a garden at home, then you should invite some of your friends over and clean your garden. You might get a little bit dirty but it is fun to do.

❤️ Kindness in Kindergarten ❤️

The kindergarteners are having tons of fun during their first year at Afton! We interviewed Miss Rendeiro to see how they are soaring in Kindergarten.
In the beginning of November, the kindergarteners learned all about the holiday of Diwali. They were able to see real diyas, which are oil lamps made of clay. They are awesome to look at.
They read nonfiction books and watched videos about this special and exciting holiday of Diwali. The kindergarteners who celebrated Diwali wore beautiful Indian dresses and brought in pictures to show how they celebrate their holiday at home.
The patriotic kindergarteners also learned all about the national holiday of Veterans Day. They read informational books and stories about this patriotic holiday. They made colorful poppies and camouflage hearts to honor the hardworking veterans. They also studied about the Armed Forces, such as the Marine Corps and the Army.
Lastly, Miss Rendeiro told us about a special event coming up for the kindergarteners. The 50th day of school! They are going to dress up like they were someone from the 1950’s by wearing poodle skirts and ties. They are going to have an outrageous time!
🎀 Third Grade Scrabble Fun 🎀
Now, I remember when I was in 3rd grade….It was really fun. That is why I chose to write about 3rd grade. I interviewed Mrs. Cramer and she talked to me about what was happening in the very popular Scrabble game. The 3rd grade has been playing Scrabble in the hallway for several years. Mrs. Foster’s Class is winning so far! Congratulations! The classes pass a bag of wooden tiles around to each class to use to make words on the large Scrabble Board at the end of the hallway. It will take about a week for the bag to get back to your class, so you have a lot of time to think of a good word. The object of the game is to get as many points as possible with each word you put on the board. Mrs. Cramer states,”Maybe you have a good word with 5 points but a shorter word with 20 points. You should play the 20 point word.”There are special spots on the board like “double points for a word” or “triple points for a letter.” “Why do they play Scrabble?” I am sure you are asking. Well apparently I learned that it helps with math because you add up the points. Then it helps you with spelling words and finally problem solving, because sometimes one class steals the word that your class was going to use, so you need to problem solve to come up with a new word. Scrabble is a great game to play and everyone in third grade watches the scoreboard to see who is winning each week.

Holy Cow, Second Grade is Fun !

In Mrs. Kelly’s class they adopted a cow named Kayla. Farmer Katie gave the cow her name. Kayla lives at Zahnroft Dairy farm in Womelsdorf PA. The second grade decided to adopt Kayla because it was a free program online. It was an easy class pet to have because it is easy to clean up after since it lives on the farm. They see Kayla in pictures that Farmer Katie sends to Mrs. Kelly. She shares them with the second grade students. They get to see how she is doing on the farm each week.
Also, the second grade students are learning fact families in math and writing things they are thankful for in writing. Soon they will be starting to learn cursive handwriting. Their next big project will be a Thanksgiving project. Thank you Mrs. Kelly for sharing the exciting events happening in second grade.
Veterans Day Google Meet in Third Grade
In order to learn more about Veterans Day, Mrs. Foster’s Third graders joined a google meet with Mrs. Bria’s class at Eleanor Roosevelt School. Mrs. Koch connected the two classes to watch a presentation by Ms. Helen Stopper, a former Principal from our school district and Lt. Col. Ken Bria of the US Army. They learned that Veterans Day celebrates all veterans, alive and dead. It honors those soldiers who protect us everyday. They taught the students about the 5 different branches of the military: Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard. Also, they learned about the World Peace Bell in Newport, Kentucky which is a symbol of peace and freedom. It is one of the largest bells ever made. It is one of the many memorials to Veterans across the United States. The memorials are for soldiers who passed away in different wars.
Did you know that nine million people died in World War One? Ms. Stopper showed us her grandfather's certificate from when he joined the Army.
Lt. Col. Ken Bria who served in the Army for thirty-six and a half years answered the students questions about being in the military. He also showed us a signed letter from President Biden for his service in the Army. Ms. Stopper shared a wonderful poem about veterans that encourages everyone to honor all veterans. The online meet-up ended with a choir of children singing a patriotic song dedicated to our veterans who protect us everyday. I hope you had a wonderful Veteran’s Day!
Fifth Grade Marvelous Math with Mrs. Murphy

In Mrs. Murphy’s Math class we have been doing some fun algebraic equations and some scavenger hunts! These are mostly for us to challenge our brains and to learn math! Another fun activity is Blooket where we have small competitions with our classmates to challenge and to test our knowledge. These wonderful opportunities come in the morning right as we come in at 9:05 and leave at 10:20 each day.
Everyday when we walk in, we start to do our warm-up which is just problems to get our brains fired up and ready for some harder equations. After that we start to do harder problems on the whiteboard. Most days we start with the easier problems and as we solve them they get harder and harder, but we are up to the challenge. Though they may be hard, we always persevere and we always get better.
Halloween Candy Survey

I took a survey of 25 kids in 5th grade to see what is the their favorite Halloween candy and here are the candy choices and results:
Kit Kat: 10 votes
Hershey Bars: 4 votes
Reese Pieces: 9 votes
Skittles: 2 votes
Jolly Ranchers: 0 votes
I was very surprised about how Jolly Ranchers got 0 votes and how many kids love Kit Kats(I’m one of them!). It was very close between Reese Pieces which got 9 votes and Kit Kats got 10 votes. I’m surprised that only 4 kids liked Hershey Bars, too! Skittles got only 2 votes though. And here are a couple of conclusions I have made about the kinds of candy kids like to get on Halloween:
. Most of the kids liked chocolate candy more than fruit candy.
. Most of the kids liked Kit Kats and Reese Pieces the most.
. Not many kids liked Skittles and Jolly Ranchers.
Overall, the kids like specific candy and they got lots of candy on Halloween!

3,2,1 Blastoff in Fifth Grade Gifted Support

“3,2,1……...BLAST OFF!” Several Mars landers have been spotted flying to the bottom of the first floor stairwell! “What is going on here?” Some teachers asked as they went down the steps. Some kids stopped and watched as the competition between the kids' different Mars landers was happening. There was cheering and excitement among all the competitors in the 5th grade gifted support class. This building challenge was part of our project “Journey to the Red Planet, Mars.” We used light materials like index cards, cardboard, plastic cups, straws, marshmallow astronauts, and our creativity to design our very own Mars landers! The challenge was to keep the astronauts in the cockpit while it was flying through the air. Each student named their Mars lander like Awesomeness, Hope, Exploration 1, Discovery 1, and many more. This helped us to understand the engineering design process of making models and improving them. Before we built the Mars landers, we designed our very own International Space Stations out of snap cubes, attribute blocks, and square tiles. Each group put their ideas together to make amazing models. While we were learning about Mars, we visited the NASA website to view videos and pictures of real rovers that landed on the surface of Mars. They are being controlled by people here on Earth. Scientists are predicting people will be on the moon and Mars in this century. If you would like to get updates on space happenings, go to https://www.nasa.gov/.
This project was a great learning experience, and really fun too! We really hope you will try this project out on your own. We are looking forward to more projects that we will build and present to our classmates. Maybe one day someone in our class will be a future astronaut who will land on the surface of Mars. Fourth Grade Physical Education with Mr. Vandermark

In Physical Education class Mr. Vandermark shared with us that the students are working on fitness skills to improve their overall health. We talked about the importance of eating healthy foods and how it gives us energy for the day.
The students just completed playing World Cup Soccer. Currently, we are doing holiday themed games such as the Turkey Bowl.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the favorite football team of most people who live in Pennsylvania. Lincoln Financial field is the Eagles home stadium in the city they call, The City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. In the first 7 games the Eagles have 2 wins and 5 losses. If the offense gets better then they will have a chance to win the division and make the playoffs.
The key player on the defense is Darius Slay who plays Cornerback. The key players on the offense are the linemen including: Jason Kelce, Brandon Brooks, Lane Johnson, Jordan Maliata, and rookie player Landon Dickerson.
Most people in Pennsylvania think that trading Carson Wentz was a good idea, but Zach Ertz was not. Carson Wentz was not a good scheme fit for the team. Zach Ertz was a good scheme fit for the team. A scheme fit means they liked and understood the playbook. Another way to make the Eagles playbook better is to add more run plays and less passing plays. The wise words of an Eagles fan, “E.A.G.L.E.S. Eagles!!!”

Book Review of the Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland

Have you ever gotten stuck on which book to read? Well, this is the article you may want to read!
The first book I will review is Wings of Fire by Tui .T. Sutherland. This author has written 14 books in this series and the 15th one, along with the two guides, and a movie are coming out soon! This series is about dragons going on wonderful adventures and facing great evils. This is a great fiction book series, with many different characters saving the world together. Each book has more creativity than the next. There are two evil sisters, a sister obsessed with her looks, and one that wants to steal the Sandwing Throne. There’s an evil dragon that rose from a mountain who makes bad puns throughout the book. Then there’s an evil ruler who wants to mind control her own subjects, but is being mind controlled herself. So there’s a question that still remains, how do these young dragons stop them?
Fifth Grade Student Council Update

Student Council, has had two meetings so far this year. Right now in the student council account we have $2,188.14 to use for fun activities. These meetings have occurred in the gym. These meetings usually occur twice a month on Wednesdays. The officers of Student Council are: Derek Pan the President, Cooper Kolvek the Vice President, Bryce Frymire the Treasurer, and Samantha Gochal the Secretary.
On December 3rd we are having a Pajama Day where you can pay $1 dollar or more to wear your comfy PJs to school. By you participating in the Pajama Day, you are helping out the Children’s Hospital of Phildelphia known as CHOP. They help kids who are sick and in need of treatment at this Philadelphia hospital.
What is a Sudoku puzzle?

Have you ever heard of a Sudoku puzzle? If you haven't, that’s cool. I’ll teach you what Sudoku is and how to play it.
So basically, Sudoku is a 9x9 square grid, 9 rows and 9 columns. Each row and each column need a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
Inside the 9x9 grid, there are 9 boxes, each are 3x3. Another goal is to get each 3x3 box to have a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
So in summary, each column, row, and box needs to have a single number like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 in them. Checkout these online websites to see if you can solve a Sudoku puzzle.

On November 10, 2021, the author Mrs. Jenni L Walsh came to our school and told us about how she became an author. She talked about her books and her life. Afton Halloween Parade

The Halloween Parade was amazing! Do you want to know why? It happened on October 29th a few days before the spookiest holiday of them all, Halloween. There was a big mystery, was the parade going to be outside or inside? The weather was looking spooooky. The whole school was walking through the hallways with their costumes on. There were silly and goofy costumes that made you burst out laughing HAHA! Everyone was surprised to see the teachers dressed as characters from Mary Poppins, the Incredibles, and Disney Princesses. The big mystery of October 2021 is that the parade was inside and we had a great time. Hope you had a spooky Halloween, too!
The Afton Halloween Parade 2021

On Oct.29th the students at Afton Elementary School got ready by dressing up for the Halloween parade. When it was time to start the parade everyone started to sit along the walls in the hallways to watch the kids go by in their costumes. Everyone was so creative with their outfits. Some people had spooky outfits but a lot of kids dressed as animals. A few kids were inflatables. But I would say everybody did a amazing job with their Halloween costumes this year at Afton School.

The school's Halloween parade was exciting and fun. A lot of students and teachers were wearing great costumes. Over the loudspeaker they played the song Somebody's Watching Me as the kids walked around the school in their costumes. Some of the songs were funny,too. The fourth grade teachers were wearing Incredibles costumes. Some fifth grade teachers were wearing Mary Poppins costumes. We got to see everyone's costumes. I think everyone had fun especially because it was Friday and it was the last day of school. We also did activities like crafting things. My class made spiders on a web after the parade. Everyone had a spectacular time at the Halloween parade.
Halloween Parade Change of Plans

It was the end of a spooky Halloween week, and we were all so excited for the parents to see their children in the Halloween parade outside of Afton School. Unfortunately, the weather forecast called for rain. On the morning of the Halloween Parade, the principal, Mrs. Gregory had to update the parents on the location of the parade. Due to COVID, parents were only able to see the parade if it was outdoors. Sadly, Principal Gregory had to cancel the outdoor parade because of the forecast for rain. However, the students were still able to dress up in their costumes and walk the halls of Afton. Mrs.Gougher videotaped and took pictures of the indoor Halloween parade. She made a great video with Halloween music of all the students for all the parents to enjoy. The Halloween parade was a great ending to the Halloween school week!
What Is A Kakurasu Puzzles?

Do you like puzzles? Some you might have heard of, others, maybe not. For instance, you might have heard of crossword puzzles, word searches, letter arrangement puzzles such as Scrabble, Rubik’s Cubes, Trivia Puzzles, and maybe Sudoku puzzles. Some you might not be as familiar with, such as the Kakurasu puzzles, Magic Eye puzzles, Rebus puzzles, Hitori puzzles, Path puzzles, and Nonogram puzzles, but today we are focusing on Kakurasu puzzles.
Kakurasu is played on an empty grid. The goal (using the clues provided) is to figure out which cells need to be colored and which ones should be left blank. This is an example of a completed Kakurasu puzzle. To solve a Kakurasu puzzle follow these directions:
The black cells in each row must add to the total given on the right.
2. The black cells in each column must add to the total given on the bottom.
3. The values on the top and left side of the puzzle give the value of each cell.
4. Looking at the first row, we have 1 + 4 + 6 + 7 = 18.
5. Looking at the seventh column, we have
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 6 + 7 = 23.
I hope you understand how to solve a Kakurasu, and I hope you try it some time!
An Afton poll - What is your second favorite NFL Team?

Philadelphia is big on sports and football is the most popular of all. The Eagles are the top NFL team in Philly. But the NFL is so popular that most people watch other teams, not just their favorite team. I have a 2nd favorite team, the Seahawks. So I wanted to see if anyone else had a favorite 2nd team, and I asked this question to my class, What is your 2nd favorite NFL team?
So, I decided to take a poll. I printed out the 32 NFL teams on a sheet of paper along with the question: What is you second favorite NFL team? Next, I handed them out to my classroom C30. My teacher then read the question aloud and C30 got to work. Once I got back home that afternoon, I tallied up the votes of the 25 responses. I found out everybody's 2nd favorite team was, here it is: the Eagles had 5 votes, the Chiefs got 3, and the Dolphins had 2. Then the Patriots, Panthers, Bengals, Jaguars, Seahawks, Giants, Saints, Steelers, Jets, Texans, Ravens, Packers, Falcons, and Buccaneers had 1 vote, and the rest had 0 votes. With this data I now know that the NFL is so popular that everybody likes different teams, and everyone has their own opinion.
Afton's 200 Board

students around Afton Elementary school have been seen getting orange tickets and putting them on the 200 board in the school lobby. We asked Mrs. Gougher, the music teacher who is in charge of the 200 board, how the 200 board got started.
Mrs. Gougher told us that the 200 board began in 2019.
The 200 board is connected to the Core 4 beliefs: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Cooperative and Be Safe. Teachers give out orange tickets to students when they see them practicing the Core 4 beliefs.
Mrs. Gougher thinks the reason that they made the 200 board is to focus on the good things people do instead of the bad decisions people make. Mrs. Gougher feels there are 200 slots on the 200 board because 300 would be too many and 100 wouldn’t be enough. With 200 spots it is the right amount for 3 to 4 weeks to fill with orange tickets.
The steps to getting an orange ticket is to SOAR with the Core 4. Once a student gets an orange ticket they take it to the lobby after the morning pledge. Mrs. Gougher will write your name down and what you did to earn your orange ticket. Then, you take a popsicle stick with a number on it and whichever row has 20 tickets first will win a reward. The next reward will be a chance to be an assistant to anyone in our school for one hour.
Students receive orange tickets everyday and the numbers that have won so far are between 81 all the way to 100. The second place winners were the 4th row and the missing numbers were 67 and 78.
The Afton Express is proud of all the students who earned an orange ticket for Soaring with the Core 4.

Band with Mr. Bailey

Mr. Bailey is one of our instrumental music teachers and coordinates our school band. This year Mr. Bailey has 59 students in the band program, 27 of which are returning musicians. The most popular instrument this year is the saxophone with 14 kids playing it. Mr. Bailey says that each of his 59 students should be practicing for 15 to 20 minutes a day because just like learning anything else, mastering an instrument takes time. I agree with that statement because I’ve played soccer for 9 years and I’m still not a master at playing soccer. On the other hand Mr. Bailey has mastered almost all the instruments in the band and most people can’t master just one.
This year the band will be playing 2 school concerts. Mr. Bailey could always use more student musicians. He said that anyone who wants to play an instrument or be in the band should try it. It’s a nice way to make music with friends. I think being in the band with Mr. Bailey is fun and a lot of people would agree, too. Look for a concert coming very soon.

Fourth Grade Student Council Report

In November the Student Council held a food drive. Students brought in boxes of pancake mix, boxes, of cereal, canned foods, and some beverages like Capri Suns. Next month there is going to be a pajama day on 12/3/21 if you want to wear your pajamas you have to donate at least one dollar to CHOP - which is a Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. Everyone can make a donation with paper money. We hope this will help the children.

Soar Squad 2021

Every Tuesday the 5th graders at Afton Elementary who want to participate in Soar Squad join Mrs. Gougher for a meeting at lunchtime. They meet inside Mrs. Gougher’s room to discuss fun activities for the whole school. We plan activities such as games, assemblies, and prizes for students. Recently, we created something called reporters. Reporters watch how kids are behaving on the school bus. Come back soon for more updates!
📚 Mrs. Moyle and the Afton Library 📚

Mrs. Moyle is our school librarian at Afton School. She has been teaching as substitute teacher and a librarian for about 22 years!
We asked her when she knew she wanted to be a librarian. Her answer was,“I didn't think I wanted to be a librarian at first because I was training to be a classroom teacher, but then when I started in the library, I loved it!”
Mrs.Moyle loves reading and her favorite books are Ramona Age 8, The Quilt Trilogy, and finally Steelheart. Her favorite genre to read is Fantasy, especially books about magic and dragons. She loves reading the books called Who Was or Who Is Which. Sometimes she likes to go to a park to read for fun.
We asked Mrs. Moyle what are some awesome books you can check out at our library. Here's her response:

Girls on the Run

In Girls on the Run we do so much more than running and jogging. Girls on the Run is an after school activity for girls who like to run. Everyone that signs up goes outside and has a snack before we begin. We talk about empathy and self care, how to treat people with kindness and help ourselves. After that we stretch and then we run, walk, skip, and jog. Then we finish by giving out our star award. The coaches pick a person that was showing kindness and pulling through with their running to receive the award. In Girls on the Run you can show your true self.
Recently, we did a community impact project. We got together and made cards for people in the hospital. Everyone did a good job and we made around 82 cards. Recently, we had our Carb Up party. We had pizza and pasta to get ready for our big 5K! The 5K took place on November 13th. There was music and stuff you could buy. Almost everyone of our Afton Girls on the Run bought tutus. During the run, there were water stations in the course. The coaches got everyone stickers, which we stuck on our faces. Sadly, Girls on the Run is over now, but all those girls in 3rd grade and above can join us next year.
✨ Spark Class with Fifth Grade ✨

The fifth grade students are having a great time doing fun and exciting experiments in Spark. They have been doing some amazing projects including looking and identifying viruses and bacteria under a microscope. Mrs Slota shared that she teaches around 95 to 100 fifth graders a week in four of the classes in fifth grade. She uses Quizlet online games to review the kinds of diseases and bacteria. Also, she teaches the communicable diseases and noncommunicable diseases.She had the students create a diagram of the parts of the immune system.
The next big project of the year will be learning about robots. Students will get to program robots to complete a task. She also loves teaching the Inertia Challenges. She thinks the students like doing science “magic tricks.” She also likes having students use microscopes and giving them a chance to act like a phycologist (a person who studies algae). She is looking forward to planning our 2nd HOPE Earth Day Event.

In Mrs. C. Jones kindergarten class the students are learning about many exciting things! In October, they carved a pumpkin and explored the gooey inside before they counted the seeds that were in the pumpkin.They went batty learning about the types of bats, too.
In November, the class made paper diyas ( lights made of clay) for Diwali.They learned about the differences between a wild and a tame turkey. The students enjoyed learning about adjectives with Pete the Cat. Now they are learning about Veterans Day and getting ready for the 50th day of school with a Sock Hop. Mrs. C Jones’ class is definitely having so much fun learning every day.
Controlled Chaos in Fifth Grade

The fifth grade students were busy mixing up magic Oobleck as part of their unit of study on Mixtures and Solutions in science. They put cornstarch and water in a tub and mixed it. Then they used their hands to stir it so it would change the mixture into a Non- Newtonian liquid also known as Ooblek. It was very messy but a lot of fun.
Fifth grade is about to begin Reading Olympics at recess. Many students have joined the teams and are excited about reading all of the books on the list to get ready for the spring competition.

💖 First Grade Bucket Fillers 💖

The First Grade students have been busy helping each other by filling their buckets with kindness after reading the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? The book helped the students to accept the challenge to fill someone's bucket each day by doing something nice for others. When a student is recognized for doing a good deed, the teacher puts a marble in the class bucket. Once the class has filled their bucket, they will get a special prize! Each first grade class uses different prizes like:: bring your stuffed animal to school day, Pajama Day, bedtime stories, dance party, and even a free choice time. All the first graders have shown that they know how to be kind during this challenging time. First graders know how to shine with kindness!
The Haunted Houses of C-28 🏚️

Mrs. Mendlow’s student’s have recently opened their very own hotels, for MONSTER’S. Apparently, it was a P.B.L, which stands for Project Based Learning. At first, their hotel’s started as shoeboxes, with random and weird items. As soon, as they planned everything out, it was time to get to work! They worked day after day, helping each other, having lots of fun, and even hiring people. In this short amount of time, they made things such as: suites, lobbies, cafes, even menus, posters, and slogans! Be careful ordering though, the food there contains eyeballs, demons, and even poison!
Fourth Grade Letters to Veterans

Veterans Day is an important national holiday celebrated all around the world, and Miss Mitchell sends our wonderful letters to the honorable veterans.
This year, Miss Mitchell collected around 400 letters and she was very happy to receive all of these heartfelt messages. She will send all these letters to three veterans hospitals. One is in Philadelphia, PA.,another is in Brooklyn, NY. The last one is in Wilkes - Barre, PA.
This year is Miss Mitchell’s second year sending letters to the hospitals. A second grade teacher, Mrs. Holm, used to do this project before she retired. She asked Miss Mitchell to continue sending the letters. In 2020, two heroes wrote back to Mrs. Rochonchou’s class. The two students who received letters from the veterans were very happy.
“Be sure to thank veterans every year on Veterans Day,” Miss Mitchell noted. We say,
” Always be thankful for our incredible heroes!”
