What is the role of DNA in biotechnology?

DNA is genetic material that controls what the cell does. Scientists are getting to a point where they can alter the DNA's instructions and control what the cell does. This is very important for biotechnology and can change things forever. For example: if the corn harvest of one year was really bad, scientists take the corn's DNA and alter it to make the corn resistant to whatever is making it's growth decline. (Harsh conditions, bugs.. ect.)

How is biotechnology used in DNA testing?

Biotechnology is used for DNA testing in many different ways. One way is the fingerprint. Your fingerprint is different from everyone else's in the world. This is why it is effective. If someone commits a crime and the police dust for fingerprints, they will easily be able to indentify the subject. Fingerprints are used almost everywhere, even on your Iphone!

How is biotechnology used in agriculture?

Biotechnology is a life saver in agriculture. Lets say a certain crop is not growing right, or is being affected negatively by bugs. To save this crop, scientists can use biotechnology to go in and take some DNA from that crop, alter the DNA, and make the crop grow again. If the crop was being affected by bugs, the scientists can make the crop's DNA resistant to that bug, so the crop is able to grow. This is how biotechnology is used in agriculture.

How is biotechnology used in environmental clean up?

There are many ways that biotechnology is used in environmental clean up. One method is called Biostimulation. This is when scientists release chemicals into an area that needs contaminates removed. These chemicals stimulate the bacteria to grow and therefore the contaminates are removed. This is one way biotechnology is used in environmental clean up.

What are some negative impacts of biotechnology?

Although biotechnology has a lot of positive effects, it has some negatives too. One possible negative effect, deals with the food produced by biotechnology. The food produced has not been heavily tested to be healthy and if it is not safe, the food could kill lots of people. Another negative effect is when the biotechnology is not controlled. After the scientists get what they want, their experiment is left to interact with normal plants and animals, which can effect a large area negatively.

A day in the life of a microbiologist

A microbiologist studies microscopic organisms such as bacteria for a living. The microbiologist spends most of his time in a lab studying the structure and life processes, but also gets outside to collect samples. This job deals heavily with biotechnology, because a microbiologist studies the organisms to see if and how the organisms can benefit us. If he finds that this organism can help with medical research, he will alert the community. Biotechnology is really just using natural things to help us and that is exactly what a microbiologist can do.
