Math
Students continued working on their understanding of fractions. We spent time focusing on adding and subtracting fractions. Students started this work by adding like fractions using number lines. They also learned how to write fractions with a value more than 1 as mixed numbers. By the end of the week they learned how to add and subtract fractions when the denominators are different but one is a multiple of the other . Students who did not need this instruction learned more about mixed numbers. The need for instruction was determined based on pre-assessment data.
We started a new Calendar Collector which focuses on multiplying fractions by whole numbers.
We do daily Number Talks which enforce the math habits of being flexible, accurate and efficient. Currently we are working on multiplication strategies such as landmark numbers, halving and doubling and partial products.
