NO SCHOOL - School Improvement Day

Writing: For Writing this past week the students worked on finishing their president biography projects. Also, we continued to write our opinions on things like whether or not we should supply water bottles at school and whether or not boys and girls should learn together. They read debate articles, formed opinions, and wrote a paragraph supplying both their opinions and the reasoning behind their opinions.

During Reading this week, we continued to discuss main idea and details with informational texts. The students read nonfiction articles and went on a hunt for the main ideas and details. They also identified a variety of main ideas and details from groups of pictures (such as school, p.e., students, teachers, books, spelling...)

Word Study:

This week in word study, we learned about homophones (words that sound the same but have different meaning and spelling). We also reviewed synonyms and antonyms.

Social Studies/Science

This week in Science we continued learning about the water cycle. In this unit, the students will be learning about the stages of the water cycle, evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and accumulation. Ask your child to explain what the water cycle is. You may also want to ask them what makes water evaporate.

This week in Math we have been working on 3 digit addition and subtraction problems, as well as story problems and money. Ask your child to explain the strategies they use for addition and subtraction.

Many students have been motivated to have more math fact practice. For those students that have asked or may need additional support, Otter Creek practice sheets have been sent home with a page protector cover. These sheets are for practice with a dry erase marker. Have your child practice one minute timings using the bottom portion of the sheet. The top portion is for practice. If you would like practice sheets for your child, please email me and I will be glad to send the sheets.
