What Do Career Counselors Really Do?
Career counselors for one offer coaching and advising on the practicalities of job search such as exploring and choosing a career path, writing for resumes, cover letters and social media, as well as strategizing with clients to find relevant job leads and networking opportunities in line with their professional goals.
But Career Counselors are also, well, counselors. We are licensed professionals who use theoretical principles to provide mental health support for those facing challenges within the working world. This could include managing depression or anxiety from enduring a layoff, learning to shift power and reframe negative self-talk when dealing with a hostile boss or workplace, working through the challenges of career transition or underemployment or simply being that objective ear to someone weighing the pros and cons of returning after being out of the workforce for a while. And that just scratches the surface!

"Who looks outside, dreams;
who looks inside, awakes"
– Carl Gustav Jung
Just imagine what it would feel like to breeze through job interviews, networking events or performance reviews with greater poise and confidence! NOBODY is perfect and believe it or not, the stakeholders in our careers really do understand this. Hiring managers and recruiters aren't out to find workers who've never made mistakes. Instead, they are seeking workers who are self aware and can openly admit to those mistakes and honestly believe that a vital part of growth is learning from them.
An important step in achieving this professional success and satisfaction starts with coming to terms with who we really are. It's an honest appraisal which includes uncovering patterns in our personalities and accepting not only our successes, joys and proficiencies but also those aspects that have held us back.
The process of counseling yields courage to make decisions based on what is true to ourselves. When we live authentically, what emits is confidence in how we present ourselves and clarity in the choices we make. This means feeling good about the jobs or occupations we choose to pursue, a greater sense of certainty in what we include on resumes, cover letters and social media profiles, and feeling more confident presenting ourselves at networking events or job interviews.
LED Career offers a supportive and diplomatic approach and would love to help you move forward toward greater success! Contact us at 708-714-2958 to get started.
Career Management and Coaching
LED Career Can Help You Adjust to Today's Expectations for Job Searching
Globalization and technology have shifted the way many companies do business, and this paradigm shift has impacted how we manage our careers. Instead of having security within one company, we may need to freelance for several companies or take on short-term projects, assembling our careers much like patchwork quilts. For some, this arrangement is very convenient allowing for greater autonomy and flexibility. The portfolio career as it is called, is perceived by others, however, as more of a challenge as this new means of seeking employment forces us to regularly "entrepreneur" our skills, accomplishments and talents much like marketers spin products to consumers.
But let's face it. Many of us would rather have oral surgery than go out and "sell" ourselves. LED Career recognizes the angst in this process and is available to offer guidance and resources for making sense of current job-search standards when it comes to career exploration, generation of job leads, self-promotion through resumes, cover letters and social media, interview coaching, etc.
Writing
Accountability. That's what potential employers or contractors want to see in any collateral we put out to promote our skills and accomplishments. Writing a resume listing responsibilities from a job description doesn't fly anymore. When stating you have skills say in leadership, organization, or problem-solving...employers want concrete proof - specific examples from past projects, assignments, etc. that really demonstrate that you not only performed the tasks but had results. It means using language that situates the reader as if they were there - where they can really imagine the way you did work, how you made an impact, how you really did make a difference!
Not everyone is an expert wordsmith and can often use help in coming up with the right words to say. LED Career can either coach you through the writing process for resumes, cover letters, brochures, LinkedIn Profiles, etc. Or…for an extra fee, create these documents for you.

Interview Coaching
Could you benefit from an interview coach?
So, you have a fantastic resume and have been asked on many interviews. But then you don’t hear back. Yes the competition for jobs is fierce, but if this becomes a recurring pattern, perhaps it’s time to seek some interview coaching from an objective professional.
Over the years, interviewing has become quite a complex process. Behavioral interviewing is a strategy used more and more by employers to better flush out those they hire. I’m sure you’re familiar with those questions that catch you off guard, asking you to provide an example of a time when you went over your supervisor’s head or when the customer service you provided didn’t go so well.
Preparation is Key
Understanding why these and other types of questions are used helps us determine how we can answer them more effectively . LED can help you better prepare and get you into a more comfortable mindset, so you can approach interviews with greater poise and confidence answering these questions with the genuine conviction that better engages the interviewer and enhances you chances to make it to the next level.
