Week 15: Thank You
Thank you. Two little words that can have such a big impact. You heard them when you searched for just the right gift…Thank you. When you paused to hold the door for someone…Thank you. When you’ve worked extra hard to make something nice…Thank you. These are some of the times that our society expects the words to be given and received. We teach them to our children – after opening a gift we’ll prompt, “What do you say?” We are offended if our door holding goes unacknowledged, and when no one notices our extra effort, relationships can be destroyed.
We are quick to give thanks when it is expected, but how often do we thank someone out of the blue? When did you last thank someone for just doing their job? “I really appreciate working with you.” Or thank your family? “I am really glad you are my kid!” or “Thank you for dinner tonight.” Just think how our world would look like if we all lived a life of noticing and showing gratitude. How many relationships would be strengthened by just simple appreciation?
1 Thessalonians 5 gives direction on Christian living which includes having an attitude of gratitude to God and others. Verse 18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances” and verse 15 states, “always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.” Saying “thank you” builds up the thanker and the receiver. Being thankful strengthens relationships with each other and with God. As we pause to celebrate Thanksgiving this coming week, set your attitude to “Grateful” and don’t forget to share it with others.
