SPS Dress Code
A Southfield Public School District student will not dress in a manner that negatively impacts the learning process or educational setting. Students may not dress in a manner that is obscene, offensive, provocative, distractive, or indecent as these detract from the learning environment. This includes, but is not limited to, students wearing clothing that positively supports and depicts messages of violence, drugs, sexual themes, hate, vulgarity, and criminal behaviors. Students are expected to adhere to the following appearance guidelines while on school property and during school-related events:
Clothing must be worn in a tasteful manner. Shirts, blouses, and tops should fully cover backs, torsos, and cleavage on all students (males, females and gender non-conformists), without any indecent exposure, including undergarments and associated undergarment straps or bands. No low cut tops allowed or bare midriffs (all students). Accordingly, pants that “sag” to expose underwear, torn or ripped pants, or shirts that rise up to expose skin are prohibited.
Pants, shorts, and skirts should be worn appropriately. Pants, trousers, and bottoms should fully cover undergarments, without any indecent exposure including underwear linings and underwear bands. Skirts should fully cover the entire thigh. If leggings/yoga pants are worn, shirts or skirts should cover the buttocks.
Southfield Public Schools recognizes that each student’s choice of dress and grooming is an expression of personal style and individual preference. Southfield Public Schools will not interfere with a student’s decision regarding their appearance, except when the choices interfere with the learning environment or school safety.
First time offenses will result in after school detention being assigned. Students with three or more dress code violations will be subject to short-term suspension.
Student Activities
There are several student activities planned for the remainder of the school year to return to Pre-COVID activities for our student body. Attendance at student activities, including attending formal events like the Senior Prom and participating in the Graduation Ceremony, as well as activities held during or after school, are privileges.
The privilege to attend any of these activities may be revoked due to violations of the SPS Code of Conduct and/or excessive unexcused absences based on the Oakland County Truancy Department:
students who miss 10 days or have been absent 10 percent of the days possible
Student & Family Communication
Electronic communication is our primary way of communicating with our school community. Regular and special announcements are sent via email.
Students should make it a regular habit to check their email at least 3 times a day:
Before coming to school
During Seminar
Before the end of the day
Parents/Guardians should make it a regular habit to check their email at twice a day:
Before the start of the school day
In the evening (no later than 8 pm)
Food (Lunch) Deliveries
Food deliveries from DoorDash, GrubHub and others, as well as lunch dropped off from parents/guardians will not be accepted. We are a closed campus and as such, do not allow students to leave our building or order food to our building. The district works hard to provide healthy, good tasting food in its cafeteria and students are always free to pack their own lunch.
1st Hour Tardy Sweep
As a reminder, doors open for students to enter the building at 7:00 am. Students are expected to be in class and ready to learn at 7:20 am. Students arriving at school or not in class by 7:20 am will be subject to tardy consequences, including, but not limited to detention and/or other disciplinary consequences. Students will receive an after school detention if tardy for the same class 3 or more times.
Unauthorized Food Sales
It is a Southfield Public Schools Code of Conduct violation for any student to sell items during the school day. Homemade/store bought items are not allowed to be sold for students’ personal gain or outside fundraisers. Items will be confiscated and a parent/guardian will be required to pick up the items from the school--items will not be returned to students under any circumstances. Repeated violations will result in disciplinary action.
Distribution of Unauthorized Materials: The act of distributing or selling materials on school property without authorization of the building administration is expressly prohibited. Violators of this provision shall be subject to disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion.

Self-Care is Everything...
After School Activities
Effective immediately, any student not participating in an authorized athletic or extracurricular activity after school MUST exit the building by 2:50 pm. Please make arrangements for your child to have reliable transportation or utilize SPS bus transportation home after school is dismissed. Students participating in an athletic or authorized extracurricular activity must immediately report to the designated location after school with their coach or sponsor.
Students who leave school to go off campus for any reason will not be allowed re-entry into the building and subject to dismissal from the after school activity. Once the activity has ended, the student must have waiting transportation. It is the responsibility of all coaches/sponsors to ensure that students are not left unattended once their activity ends. Students who are chronically without waiting transportation will not be allowed to continue participating in the activity.
These measures are in place to ensure the safety and security of all staff and students during dismissal at 2:35 pm each day. As the district has heightened security measures in all buildings, immediate exit at the end of the day, as well as timely attendance expectations for extracurricular and athletic activities, creates an environment of accountability and increased safety for all.
NEW SPS Mask Guidelines
On Friday, February 25, 2022, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) issued new guidance regarding recommendations on mask wearing for K-12 schools depending on county COVID19 Community Levels. For areas with low or medium, the CDC no longer recommends universal indoor mask wearing in K-12 schools and early education settings in areas – this applies to Oakland County. This leaves School Districts at their own discretion as to if they choose to require that people wear masks.
Southfield Public Schools has always been and remains committed to our student’s safety. Given this commitment, the Southfield Public Schools Board of Education under board policy 8450 Control of Casual – Contact Communicable Diseases, highly recommends protective facial coverings when the CDC deems the “COVID-19 Community Level” medium.
This resolution was unanimously supported at an emergency meeting held on March 1, 2022. Furthermore, the signed Resolution will be documented in the official minutes of the Board of Education. This situation remains fluid and is subject to change as information is received from the CDC and Health Departments.
