From the principal's desk
I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday break. As we start a new year, I want to take a moment to share my resolution to be more present and attentive with my work and home families. In this digital-driven world, it is so easy to become distracted by technology.
Connection is such an important part of creating and maintaining healthy relationships. While this short video talks about relationships with kids from birth to age 5, it serves as a simple reminder for all of us about the importance of putting down our devices, setting aside outside distractions, and interacting with those we love.
I encourage you to find small ways to be intentional in connecting with those you love!
As always thank you for supporting your child, our staff, and our school.
Respectfully,
Paula Seaman

Mrs. Ching Named OHPS Employee of the Month!
Mrs. Ching was recognized for her efforts in reminding students and staff that the holiday season is one of giving. Mrs. Ching organized the Holiday Drive for WAIF, a Letters to Santa project benefitting The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and had Hillcrest students across grade levels make cards for our seniors including residents of Harbor Tower Village, Regency on Whidbey, Home Place Special Care, Regency Coupeville, and those seniors who use the Meals on Wheels program.
Herons are a caring community giving back to the community and we are so proud of Mrs. Ching for organizing these wonderful opportunities for students.
WINTER WEATHER AND SCHOOL CLOSURES
We pride ourselves on getting students to and from school safely. When weather, road, or school conditions result in a schedule change, we inform families of one of the following changes. Keep in mind that some areas of the district experience more severe weather and driving conditions than others. School closures and schedule changes are districtwide, even if your neighborhood is not severely impacted. If your residential area has hazardous road conditions, please do not attempt to drive to school and notify your school of your situation. As a reminder, if schools are operating on a normal schedule, no notifications will be issued.

Character Strong Focus for January
This month we are talking about the trait of Perseverance.
Perseverance: the ability to work through situations even when there are obstacles or challenges in the way.
A lot of research today is telling us that the highest indicators of success in our kids aren't just about their grades or their IQ. The number one skill that helps people of all walks of life be successful is GRIT! The ability to persevere in the face of adversity or even failure. Over the course of the month, we will talk about inspiring people who faced many failures before they found success. We will talk about what it means to navigate tough stuff, even when it feels overwhelming or really hard. We will talk about having a Growth Mindset- to see challenges and failures as an opportunity to grow instead of a brick wall.
