GWAEA Media Center Update
March 2020
Clean Alert!
Did you know that the GWAEA Media Center cleans every time in our collection every time it is returned?
Each book is wiped down with disinfecting wipes or rubbing alcohol. Both of these are known to kill viruses and bacteria. After being disinfected, items are set out to dry before they are returned to the shelves for the next user.
Other items such as manipulatives, toys, and models are sanitized with a part bleach solution that is made fresh daily. Environmentally friendly sanitizing wipes with no bleach are also an option for those with allergies or sensitivities. Cloth items, such as weighted blankets, are laundered in our washer and dryer on site.
This sanitizing procedure is not new at GWAEA, but we thought it would be a great time to share this fact! As we all try to keep our community healthy, it is helpful to know we’ve got you covered.

TumbleBooks for Earth Day
This important and timely picture book is publishing to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission, telling the story behind the photograph, both inside the spaceship and back on Earth. Text includes dialogue pulled from NASA’s Apollo 8 transcript, drawing readers into the iconic moment Earth was photographed from space. An author’s note at the end explains more about the photograph, the Apollo 8 mission, and how Earthrise went on to inspire Earth Day.
From the Desks of Julie Courter, Teacher Librarian, Tipton Community Schools
Julie Courter, Tipton PreK-12 teacher-librarian, welcomes the opportunity to introduce digital tools to students that can be accessed individually at both school and home. She appreciates the animation of books and the excitement this resource brings to students and literacy.
To read what Julie, teachers, and students have to say about their experience with BookFlix, read our blog post here.
Student Votes Needed for Iowa Award Books!
Votes from students around the state will be compiled and winners will be announced later this spring. The Iowa Goldfinch, Children's Choice, Teen Choice, and High School Award Books provide an opportunity for all grade levels to let their voice be heard. Not every book on the list has to have been read by student voters--but at least two. There is still plenty of time to get involved. The deadline for voting is March 30!
