Transcendentalism

By Kyla Harwell

Crystals- Of Monsters And Men

Lost in skies of powdered gold

Caught in clouds of silver ropes

Showered by the empty hopes

As I tumble down, falling fast to the ground

I know I'll wither, so peel away the bark

Cause nothing grows when it is dark

In spite if all my fears, I can see it all so clear

I see it all so clear

Cover your crystal eyes

And feel the tones that tremble down your spine

Cover your crystal eyes

And let your colors bleed and blend with mine

Making waves in pitch black sand

Feel the salt dance on my hands

Raw and charcoal colored thighs feel so cold

And my skin feels so paper-thin

I know I'll wither, so peel away the bark

Cause nothing grows when it is dark

In spite if all my fears, I can see it all so clear

I see it all so clear

Cover your crystal eyes

And feel the tones that tremble down your spine

Cover your crystal eyes

And let your colors bleed and blend with mine

But I'm okay in see-through skin

I forgive what is within

Because I'm in this house

I'm in this home

All my time

Cover your crystal eyes

And feel the tones that tremble down your spine

Cover your crystal eyes

And let your colors bleed and blend with mine

Meaning...

At the beginning of the song, the singer says she's "lost in skies of powdered gold", where she has all this money to use, but the sky is useless with its beauty. And although she realizes it, she is still "caught in the clouds". Once she has broke free, she starts to "tumble down, falling fast to the ground". She was living what seemed to be a beautiful dream, but now she has broken out of it, and has started feeling the pain of the world.

Connection...

"Crystals" by Of Monsters and Men is a great example of Thoreau's 6th principle, time and personal growth. After figuring out the messy life she lives, and realizing the beauty in the small things, she is now taking the time in noticing it all while also figuring out what she needs to do in order to fix what is broken in her life. "But I'm okay in see-through skin,

I forgive what is within" she says. By forgiving herself, she is moving on from the way she lived before, and has opened her eyes to see the beauty in nature.

Personal Reflection...

I feel as if Thoreau's 6th principle perfectly corresponds with this song, and is something that many others need to think about doing in their life, including myself. There are so many people, new technology, and our lives get so busy that we get distracted from what beauty does surround us.

Cast Away

When FedEx worker Chuck Nolan crashes his plane on a deserted island, he is left alone for years. After many attempts to sail away and contact help fail, the island becomes his new home.

Connection...

In the movie Cast Away, Thoreau's 2nd law, contemplation of divine nature, is the life Nolan is living. He has to learn to live on his own, through nature. Although he landed on the island by accident, the lesson is that you don't need anyone in order to survive, you just need determination and strength to be on your own. Nature is the one and only thing that won't always let you down when you're all alone.

Personal reflection...

If it were me stuck on an island all alone, I wouldn't have the determination to try to be one with nature. But since he really didn't have a choice, Nolan did what he could to survive. I definitely rely on other people, for almost everything. And this movie, and Thoreau's principles say that I don't need to rely on other people in order to be satisfied in life.
