All student also continued to work on the keyboarding skills. 6th grade's current goal is 19 words per minute with 90% accuracy this week. 7th and 8th graders also worked on the keyboarding skills. Their goal is 31 wpm with 90% accuracy.
While some students have already met grade level goals, all students should practice to improve their skills. Students were instructed if they did not meet their minimum goal that they should practice at home. They may practice anytime at typingtraining.com. Students can even use their Chromebooks to practice anywhere they have an Internet connection. They all have their login information. If you have any issues logging on at home, please email me. You can monitor your child's progress at home and school by going to the reports menu after they have logged into Typing Training. Many computer students email to ask login information or for me to assign specific assignments on typingtraining.com. I welcome these emails and respond as soon as possible.

6th grade band: The woodwinds in 6th grade band are working on playing tests and retaking playing tests. The brass are still working in the book as well. The students should begin working on their music for the concert. Out next concert will take place on Monday December 19 at 6:30 PM in the middle school gym.
7th grade band: 7th grade band completed chair testing and is moving forward in their work on their sheet music for the concert on Monday, December 19 at 6:30 PM in the middle school gym. Students need to be working on their concert music, we will be working on that very heavily. The main part we will be addressing next week will be the ending of all of our pieces. Please encourage your students to practice over break!
8th grade band: The students in 8th grade band have been working so hard on the sheet music for the upcoming concert. Students got to experience a Skype session with Randall Standridge, the composer of one our pieces. We absolutely loved working with him and cannot wait to do something like that again. The band also has a guest clinician on Monday, December 12 to work our concert pieces. Please encourage your students to practice.
7th and 8th grade wire choir: Students in this class are preparing Christmas Carols as we have been given the oppotunity to perform at FEC and Playhouse Bistro on December 16. This will be during school hours and more information will become available as I receive it. This will REPLACE the concert on DECEMBER 19! THE GUITAR KIDS WILL NOT PERFORM AT THE CONCERT AS THEY WERE REGULARLY SCHEDULED TO!

HORNET SINGERS:
Hornet Singers...though they be but few, they be mighty!
I can't believe it is already December! We have been digging into our Christmas music...as you may have heard around your house...and preparing to finish 2016 strong.
The upcoming concert will be held in the FMS Gym on Tuesday, Dec. 20th at 7pm. We hope to see you there!
The choir handbook and schedule is online for your perusal anytime. (www.fulton58.org)
HARMONY HORNETS:
We can not wait until this group gets to showcase what they have been so diligently working on every Tuesday! Our amazing group is made up of a mixture of 6th-8th grade (7th/8th band or guitar members) and has great energy and interest in making great music. Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 3:20 - 4:15 in the FMS choir room (G07).
The debut concert for Harmony Hornets will be held in the FMS Gym on Tuesday, Dec. 20th at 7pm. We hope to see you there!
If you ever have any questions, concerns, or comments, feel free to contact me at llehman@fulton58.org.
HORNET PRIDE:
Our music for the upcoming concert is coming along nicely. Each singer is working hard to make the best use of our rehearsal time. I am truly impressed with their focus! Let's keep it up!
Please make sure you have our Tuesday, December 20th concert at 7pm in your calendar!
PLEASE REMEMBER that choir members MUST be in uniform at ALL of our performances this year. You may purchase the required polo shirt by bring $13 ($15 for XL) to Dr. Moebes. You will receive a receipt for your payment.
ARTS ALIVE:
We have wrapped up our unit of tempo and dynamics, and are getting ready to start our Battle of the Bands! Students will form bands and compose a song that is at least 1 minute long. This will be a rhythm-based, original song using unconventional instruments. If you have recyclables such as bottles, coffee cans, milk jugs, or plastic containers you'd like to donate for our band? Have your student bring them in!
WIN: Acting Enrichment
We have started a new rotation of 6th grade WIN time! I'm excited by the hard work each student. We have finished writing our story, and will be creating 2 acting teams. Acting teams will stage the story and act it out. Videos of the performances will be shared out, and the team whose play receives the most votes will earn a prize! This group is working nicely together, and is very creative!

Mr. Jackson
What a great time of year!!!! We have come away from Thanksgiving and the opportunity to reflect and give thanks for everything we have. We are quickly racing towards Christmas and the giving and receiving of gifts to loved ones. I found myself thinking of gifts that would be more than a month of enjoyment, or until the game was "beat". Enter the "cliche" library plug... books are possibly one of the perfect gifts. You can become anything, you can find any interest, you can master skills you wouldn't otherwise even have access to. Books remove limits, raise ability levels, and feed and energize our brains.
Check out this great link READING I found that works through some ways to encourage your students to read. Some fantastic recommendations with some very practical application. Enjoy the time, make memories, and grow together with your students.
Feel free to contact me at jjackson@fulton58.org with any questions or concerns.

DISCOURAGING INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR IN THE CLASSROOM
Here are some tips shared with teachers that might be helpful at home as well.
DID YOU KNOW?
▶ Exclusion and punishment are ineffective at producing long-term reduction in problem behavior (Costenbader & Markson, 1998).
▶ Punishing problem behavior without a positive, proactive, educative approach has been shown to actually increase aggressions, vandalism, truancy, and dropouts (Mayer & Sulzer-Azaroff, 1990; Skiba, Peterson, & Williams, 1997).
Implementation
▶ Be consistent and respond to misbehaviors each time they occur.
▶ Increase active supervision
▶ Increase pre-corrects
▶ Respond using a calm and professional tone and demeanor
▶ Respond privately
▶ Be specific and brief in what you want student to do instead—refer to your posted classroom rules and procedures.
▶ Refocus the class if needed.
Strategies to Manage Minor Classroom Behavior
Strategy: Explanation: Example:
Proximity
The strategic placement/movement by the teacher in order to encourage positive behavior.
Stand next to a struggling student and give her positive specific feedback when she follows rules.
Signal, Nonverbal Cue
Signals the teacher is aware of the behavior and prepared to intervene if it continues.
Sustained eye contact, hand gestures, a handclap, finger snap, or clearing your throat
Ignore, Attend, Praise
Praise an appropriately behaving student in the proximity of a student who is not following expectations while not giving eye contact.
Student is off task, ignore him and tell the student next to him how well he is being on task. When student gets on task, give him praise.
Re-direct
Brief, clear, private verbal reminder of the expected behavior from the classroom rules.
“Please follow the directions and put your book away.” Then later, praise her for following directions.
Re-teach
Specifically instruct the student on exactly what should be done to follow the classroom rule.
Model “on task” behavior (have only book, pencil and paper out, start reading or writing right away and raise hand if you need help). Have students practice.
Provide Choice
Stating two alternatives, the desired behavior and a less preferred choice (away from peers, work later during fun activity, etc.)
“You can be respectful and work quietly at your seat or you can move to the private student ofice. Which do you prefer?” Later, praise student for working quietly.
Student Conference
An individual re-teaching or problem solving opportunity
Reteach the classroom rule(s). Tell why following the rule is better. Have student practice. Provide feedback. Develop a plan to use the rule in the future.
