SJCS Family Newsletter

September 2021

I recently received the quote embedded to the right in a text message from a dear friend.

Reading it made me stop in my tracks and reflect on my role on campus and specifically these first couple of weeks of school. My goal as campus principal is to be a servant-leader, to model the expectations of our school, and to guide our children and young adults to successful futures.

I never imagined how powerful spreading the good just might be until going through transitioning to a new school while continuing to operate during a global pandemic. It has become so real to me through all of this: put good into the world and the good will continue to grow.

All of us - parents and educators alike - have poured so much into making a great experience for our students and each other and it has turned into an attraction of even more! Have there been hard moments over the course of the last few weeks? Absolutely. Will there be more difficult decisions to make? Yep. And {not but}, we will make it through all of that! You may be thinking, "Mrs. Mishler, how can you be so sure?" I am sure because I believe in the power of good, the power of gratitude, and the power of prayer.

It is hard to put into words how much the staff and I appreciate your continuation of grace and patience as we figure out the nuances of school this fall. I am so thankful for the support that our families have provided us both in breakfast tacos {this may be my love language}, over social media, and even in private conversations.

It is your continued support of the work we do on behalf of our students and families that makes working at SJCS such an amazing experience. Thank you.

Go Eagles & God bless!

Mrs. Mishler

P.S. Our family newsletters are organized in three groups: All Student Information, Elementary School, and Secondary School. I hope this helps you find the information you need that is relevant to your family.

NWEA MAP Testing

During the week of September 20th, students in grades 3-8 will be taking MAP Growth.

MAP Growth is designed to measure student achievement in the moment and growth over time. MAP Growth can also track students' individual growth over time, wherever they are starting from and regardless of the grade they are in.

Be on the lookout for an email from Mrs. Kleiber with more information.

All School Spirit Dress

All students are encouraged to show their school spirit on our spirit themed Thursdays for the fall! Check out the dress up days and themes below.

  • Elementary students may dress up in the themed attire or wear spirit dress.
  • Secondary students may dress up in the themed attire or wear their regular uniform.

For our new families, spirit dress allows students to wear a St. Joseph t-shirt or shirt in school colors with their regular uniform bottoms (shorts or skirt) or jeans/jean shorts (3" above the knee). Please refer to the student handbooks for clarification.

We can't wait to see all the fun clothes and accessories that everyone wears!

Feeling sick? Please stay home!

With the nature of COVID and the precautions we take at school with illness, we ask that you please DO NOT send your student to school if they do not feel well before they leave the house in the morning. We understand the desire to not miss instruction, however, we want to err on the side of caution because the health and safety of our students, staff, and families is more important!

When a student gets to school and is then sent home with COVID-like symptoms, we have to displace each class to a new location so we can disinfect each room they previously visited that day. This creates quite a distraction to the learning environment and causes learning to not take place.

If your student is feeling ill with COVID-like symptoms and does not come to school, please email your campus Administrative Assistant (Elementary - Mrs. Svatek, Secondary - Mrs. Tietjen) as soon as possible so we can work through the safety protocols.

Elementary Night at the Complex

Don't forget elementary night out at The Complex on Friday, September 3rd. Elementary students get in free and are able to run the field before the Varsity football team. Students should arrive in time to run the field at 6:45pm.

Elementary students who attended Eagle Cheer Camp will get to cheer at the game. They should wear their camp shirt and meet behind the home bleachers at 6:15 PM.

Free popsicles for all Elementary students!

The Complex is located at 6044 Rye Loop, Bryan, Texas 77807.

Our book fair is next week, September 3-7, and Mrs. Sweeney, our Librarian, is so excited to share the love of books and reading with our Eagles!

The Book Fair will be housed at the St. Joseph PAC. You can purchase items online or set up your ewallet on our SJCS Scholastic website. Every purchase from the Book Fair earns rewards for our school.

FISH vs Service hours: What is the difference?

As students advance to the Secondary School, they are asked to complete their OWN service hours in addition to the FISH (Families In Service Hours) commitment. These are the student's independent responsibility and are discussed and turned in through their religion class.

Jr. High students serve 10 hours, Freshman serve 20 hours, while Sophomores and Juniors serve 25 hours annually. Seniors also serve 25 hours and write an essay component also explained via their Theology class.

Look for ways to complete your FISH commitment each month throughout the year (like the aforementioned Athletic Volunteer options).

Washington DC Trip 2022

On Wednesday, September 22nd, Coach Walker will host a parent meeting to go over the details for an optional three-day Washington DC student tour scheduled for May/June 2022 through Gerber tours.

Students eligible for this trip are our current 8th, 9th and 10th graders.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please email Coach Walker at swalker@stjosephbcs.org.
