Falcon Friday Update-October 7 2022
Olathe South High School
Principal's Corner
Oct 12th will be an important day for our OS students. Grades 9-11 will be participating in our Fall Testing Day. 9th and 10th graders will be taking the PreACT exam and 11th graders will be taking a practice ACT exam.
These exams are no cost to the students and will provide excellent feedback about their general high school progression and college readiness. All 9-11 graders should make every effort to be in attendance next week on Oct 12th for this important day. The data from these exams will help you as a parent track academic growth as well as planning for their post-secondary plans. It is also good information to have as we head into enrollment for the 2023-24 school as your student chooses classes to help meet their goals.
Seniors will not be on campus that day. This day is set aside for them to explore and visit their post-secondary destination. It is a great day for a college or technical school visit or an appointment with a military recruiter or other training option.
Enjoy your weekend!

TEST DAY… 10.12.2022
Wednesday, October 12th, is TEST DAY for all freshmen (PreACT 8/9), sophomores (PreACT), and juniors (Practice ACT). We also will be giving a few students the PSAT and WorkKeys exams. Students do not need to bring their bookbag or other belongings. They will not be able to access electronic devices during testing (including cell phones and smart watches). Students may bring a water bottle and snack if they would like.
Please encourage your student to eat a nutritious protein-rich breakfast and have a good night’s sleep so that they are ready to begin testing right at 8:00 a.m. School will be dismissed at 12:20 pm. Lunch will not be served, however buses will run on this day.
Seniors will not attend school on October 12th and will be able to utilize this time to work on college applications or visits, financial aid, or other post-secondary options that day.

Test day at Olathe South - October 12
Test Day at Olathe South is October 12, 2022 and a variety of tests will be offered during this half day of school (8:00am-12:20pm). Seniors will take this day to explore post-secondary opportunities and do not need to attend on this day.
Freshman default test is the PreACT 8/9 and Sophomores default test is the PreACT. These tests offer students an opportunity to learn about high-stakes assessment. It measures what they have learned in school to this point and what they will need to succeed in college. There is NO cost for this test.
Juniors default test is a Practice ACT. It is recommended that juniors take the ACT in the spring of their junior year. On this day, most of our juniors will have the opportunity to take a full-length practice ACT test. This will give them a good idea of where they stand so they can better prepare for the ACT in the spring of their junior year. There is NO cost for this test.
Junior or senior students with an interest in the military have the opportunity to take the ASVAB test administered by the military on Wednesday, October 12 at Olathe North. There is NO COST to the student and there is NO OBLIGATION to the military. The reports provide great information about you and your strengths and can provide valuable insight to possible career choices in your future. Spots are limited, so register today! PSAT-The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The PSAT is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives students who score well an opportunity to enter NMSC scholarship program and gain access to college and career planning tools. Sophomores can register to take the test as practice. Juniors take the test to hopefully be named a National Merit Scholar. The PSAT measures skills in critical reading, mathematics, and writing. Students who want to compete for National Merit Recognition should consider taking the PSAT. The cost for this test is $20 and registration is required. See flier for registration information.
