From the Middle EMS and ELA
News from the Principal, September 9, 2019
Hello Parents and Families,
Thank you for your feedback about the Back to School Night for EMS and ELA. We have a few new ideas for ensuring that our families continue to have opportunities to learn about our school and our classrooms.
Just a reminder that food and drink are not allowed in classrooms. We are working very hard to keep our school looking great and clean. Students are allowed water or other drinks that are clear and colorless. Students who come into the front doors in the morning with coffee or other drinks that are not clear/colorless will be asked to finish them outside or throw them away, or go in through the commons doors to finish breakfast in the cafeteria.
Please read below about some exciting events and work this week.
Thank you for your support...as always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

CULTURE AND CLIMATE: Providing a nurturing learning environment
For this week's focus, I wanted to share our lunchroom procedures and protocols. We divide our students by grade level into two groups for lunch. The first group is outside (or in the gym) first for playtime and the other group is in the cafeteria first to eat lunch. Then at the halfway point, we switch.
Student have approximately 20 minutes to eat lunch which includes time for going through the hot lunch line. The first few weeks, we had a hard time with getting all students through the line quickly, but with practice and changes to our process, we generally have all the students through the hot lunch line within the first 8 minutes of lunch. To make sure the line moves quickly, it is best to have students load their lunch accounts ahead of time (see the link below) and make sure they have their ID to scan at the check-out.
Also, please keep in mind that if you need to pick up your student during the lunch time (12:10--12:50), it will generally take at least 10 minutes to send a pass to the commons or outside and to have the student return to the office. If you are needing to pick up your student over the lunch period, I would recommend that you call the office before 12:10 to have your student waiting for you in the office or wait until 12:45 to pick up your student.

As we are continuing to focus on the work of our first and second 90-Day Plans in EMS, our teachers are engaging in high leverage work by using student data from classroom assessments to guide the next steps in learning. Our dedicated teachers are also dedicated learners.
Englewood Leadership Academy will begin their first 90-Day Plan this school year.
