CELEBRATIONS!
Great things are happening at WCS!
This Tuesday, WCS hosted the Woolwich town election in the cafeteria from 8AM - 8PM. That day the doors were wide open to the public for voting. As it was a gubernatorial race, we saw a large turnout, and people were in and out of the building all day. Saying the pledge that morning certainly took on special meaning with students and staff in their classrooms!
WOOLWICH WORD
The latest edition of the Woolwich Word is out! CLICK HERE to read over this week's student newspaper; be sure to vote on this week's Question of the Issue!
PD & VETERANS DAY
There will be no school tomorrow, Thursday, 11/10 as the teachers spend the day on Professional Development. There will be no school the following day, Friday, 11/11 as we honor all of the veterans of the uniformed services who work (and have worked) to protect our lives in times of peace as well as war.
INCOGNITO TURKEY CONTEST
The PTA is hosting the Incognito Turkey contest again this year! Our cute little turkey doesn't want to be eaten for Thanksgiving, so it's going incognito and needs our Wildcat help! Have your student pick up a copy of our turkey page at school, then color or decorate the turkey so it looks like anything other than a turkey! Drop your disguised turkeys off in one of the drop boxes at school, and we will draw some winners on November 18th! CLICK HERE for a printable copy. Remember to sign your name!
LOST & FOUND
Our Lost & Found is simply bursting at the seams! Please have your child check to see if they have misplaced a hoodie, or a jacket since since the start of school. Parents are also welcome to stop by and look through what has been collected; the Lost & Found is located in front entry of the building.
All unclaimed items will be donated over Thanksgiving break.
HARVEST SUPPER
BASKETBALL TRYOUTS
Tryouts for Girls and Boys Basketball will be next week. All paperwork needs to be submitted before tryouts can take place, (paperwork can be found in the office an on the WCS Athletics page.) Remember: A new Parent/Student Extracurricular form needs to be submitted for each sports season and if your student had a physical on file for 2022 fall sports, that will work for Basketball!
TRYOUT SCHEDULE:
Boys' tryouts will be Monday 11/14 from 3:00-4:30 and Wednesday 11/16 from 4:30-6:00.
Boys may not stay after school on Wednesday to wait for tryouts.
Girls' tryouts will be Wednesday 11/16 and Thursday 11/17 from 3:00-4:30!
DODGEBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The dodgeball championships wrapped up On Wednesday, and the staff team was VICTORIOUS this year. The Mysterious Mustache finished in second place after an intense championship round. Thanks to all teams for participating! Floor hockey will be our next intramural in the spring!
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES 11/21
ALL students, grades K-8 will have ½ days with dismissal at 11:55AM on both Monday and Tuesday 11/21 and 11/22. WCS conferences will only be held on Monday 11/21 between 12:00PM - 6:00PM.
Once again, we will be scheduling Parent/Teacher Conferences online with PTCFast. On this site you will be able to schedule a conference for all of your children. If you do not have internet access, you can call the office (443-9739) and we will schedule the conference(s) for you, or answer any questions.
Click on https://woolwich.rsu1.org/o/woolwich-central-school then on the “Parent/Teacher Conference Schedule and Sign Up” link to schedule your children.
You will be directed to a screen with all the teachers listed. Click on your child(ren)’s teacher(s).
Middle school parents (Grade 6, 7 & 8) should meet with their student’s individual subject teachers. You will have 10 minute conferences and may choose with teachers you would like to speak with.
If you have more than 1 child, select “...more than one student” on the next screen.
Fill in your child’s first and last name on the next screen and click “done” when finished.
Enter your contact information and click “submit.”
You will receive an email within the next few minutes, with a link that will take you to the sign up screen, where you can choose what conference time is best for you.
We encourage you to leave time between conferences, so that the schedule will not get bogged down. (3:15 - 3:30 and then 3:45 - 4:00, e.g.)
Since there are limited time slots available, we are limiting conferences to one per child. Conferences are 15 minutes for K-5 and 10 minutes for 6th, 7th & 8th. Please adhere to the time limit. Feel free to email your child’s teacher throughout the school year to stay up to date. You can find email addresses of staff on the school website.
HEALTHY HIGHLIGHTS
Sickness and Health..... Covid is still about and if your child has symptoms, please test and let the school nurse know the results. Also, because we were isolated and masked for so long, we have to once again build immunity to many of the things we are exposed to every day. Colds are rampant, ear infections are happening, (these will NOT go away if left untreated,) strep throat has been diagnosed, and last but not least RSV is present as well. We want your child in school every single day they can be here, and it is fine to be in school with sniffles, a cough, or a stuffy nose. You and you alone know when it is best to send or keep your child home. If you are on the fence about what to do, I am a wonderful resource to check with. We cannot teach your children if they are absent, however we have to balance the need for attendance with the possibility of sick children infecting others with serious illnesses. ~ Roberta Sherwood, R.N., BSN, M.Ed
SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT
Woolwich Central School is once again partnering with the Bath Area Food Bank to help stock their shelves in this time of great need. They have helped feed MANY families in Woolwich and now is our turn to give back. WE ARE COLLECTING CANS OF SOUP: our goal is 100 cans in 3 days..... CAN WE DO IT? A box will be located in the entry way for people to drop off, OR you can send cans in your student's backpack. We plan to deliver to the Bath Area Food Bank before the Thanksgiving holiday.
CLYNK bags are available in the school office. Bottles and cans collected in these bags and returned to a Hannaford Clynk center will benefit the 8th grade class!
In Science, fourth graders are building roller coaster tracks to investigate how energy is stored, how it can make objects move, and how collisions transfer energy between objects. It's been a lot of ups and downs but students have loved the lesson (get it?!)
Fourth and fifth grade students from the RSU 1 gifted and talented program visited Bowdoin College's Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum this month to learn about animals of the Arctic, Arctic exploration, and Inuit culture. They additionally listened to a professor speak about climate science and the study of the planet's warming and cooling patterns through the examination of glacier ice cores. Students will meet again in December to further explore the topic of ice.
This is the place to get all your WCS-branded clothing and accessories.
