SHS Weekly News February 11, 2019
Congrats Mrs. Roberge!
To her students, Rachel Roberge is a teacher who “leads by example.” To her colleagues, she is “a crucial member” of the school community. For Roberge, it was just “another school day” when she was teaching her science classes at Scituate High School Wednesday - that is, until her classroom filled with family members, her colleagues, and cameras.
The Scituate High School community nominated Roberge, science teacher, for the “Golden Apple Award,” presented to her on Feb. 6 by education professionals including Rhode Island Department of Education - RIDE's Ken Wagner, education commissioner, and newsroom employees of NBC 10 WJAR.
Roberge, who has been teaching at SHS for over ten years and is now the Rhode Island Health Occupations Students of America chapter advisor, said she was thankful to receive the award. Roberge also works with students in special education as an inclusion teacher, school officials said.
“I love my students and what I do,” she said.
Jason Goffe, a biomedical science teacher at the school, and Alexis Surtel, a SHS senior and Scituate’s HOSA chapter president, nominated Roberge for the award. Collectively in their nomination, they described Roberge as a “fantastic teacher” who has “earned the respect of her students and colleagues here at Scituate High School.”
Thanks to her organization of the local HOSA chapter for future health care professionals, the pair said, students have been provided opportunities to learn skills including CPR and blood pressure screening techniques - services that are now offered for free to the community - as well as the chance and knowledge to compete in the 2018 HOSA “Spring Leadership Conference,” where SHS won a gold medal for a perfect score and advanced to the “International Leadership Conference,” where the SHS team clinched 7th-place.
The nomination letter continued in part that Roberge, “leads by example,” is “kind-hearted, professional, inspiring,” and a role model.
Principal Michael Hassell said Roberge holds students to high standards, and said she, “truly prepares students for their next step in life, whether that be the next science course, college, career, or to be contributing members of society.”
He said, “Mrs. Roberge never stops caring for our students. She continues to go above and beyond both inside and outside of the classroom. She is a crucial member of our school community at Scituate.”
When handing Roberge the award, Wagner thanked her for her work as a teacher, “opening up worlds for kids, through science. It’s so, so important.”
