Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!! We are excited to begin another great year filled with learning, memories, and so much more!!

During the 2020-2021 school year, "The Lion Dispatch", will be sent out electronically to our families. Families will receive "The Lion Dispatch" one time per month over the course of the school year. Our families have access to "The Lion Dispatch" on our district website, as well.

LPS Meal Program Survey Results and Update

Louisville Public Schools Food Survey Results.

In early Spring of 2020, working with Taher Food Service, Louisville Public Schools provided our educational community with a survey regarding the current delivery of meals and our relationship with Taher. At the conclusion of the survey, LPS had received a total of 533 responses from the following groups; 282 parents, 215 students and 36 staff members. Approximately a 26% response rate to the survey.

As a district, we recognize that in order for our students to be effective learners, they need access to healthy food options. With that said, our goal in utilizing the survey was to gain insight into our school meal program and make adjustments as needed. Louisville Public Schools would like to thank those individuals who gave us their time and responded to the survey. After further analysis, those individuals that responded consistently indicated they 1.) enjoyed the breakfasts provided, 2.) identified crispitos, pizza and tacos as their, or their student’s favorite meals, and 3.) appreciated the individual wrapped salad option.

Over 80% of those that responded to the survey, indicated the following as their top concern(s).

1.) Quantity of food provided, 2.) Price of food provided was too high, 3.) Need for access to a salad bar with fresh fruit and “green” food, as well as 4.) Need for improved service provided by TAHER representatives, (not to be confused with LPS employees). Please see the Q & A below in response to the identified concerns.

1.) How is the quantity of food determined for my students' meals?

The Healthy Meals for Children Act, passed in May 1996, expanded the range of menu planning options for schools, and reinforced the requirement that all school meals must meet specific dietary guidelines. These standards require a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; set limits on saturated fat and sodium; and set both minimum and maximum calorie levels. Levels and food quantity are also based on student age and grade level. Currently TAHER FOOD SERVICE is meeting those requirements.

2.) How is the student meal price set?

The goal of a school lunch program is to be self - supporting, as a result, funds provided from the federal and state government along with food sales fully fund the service. Local school food authorities set their own prices for full-price meals based on the guidelines provided by the department of education nutrition services and federal government.

Recognizing the challenges facing our families due to the Covid -19 pandemic, LPS will not increase lunch prices this school year. Please see comparable prices from area school district below.

3.) May students have access to a salad bar with fresh fruit and vegetables?

Yes, moving forward, once the covid -19 restrictions are lifted, LPS intends to provide our students with access to a salad bar during lunch. The fruit and salad bar will be available for all students who purchase a meal, it can also be utilized by students who wish to purchase food directly from the food bar.

4.) What are the expectations regarding TAHER’s customer service to LPS?

The district understands that providing a good meal service does not only require nutritious food, but also meaningful and effective communication, as well as positive interactions between all those involved including servers, students, parents and LPS staff. Working with TAHER management LPS has provided both direction and outlined expectations for standards pertaining to the positive interaction of our students, communication to our parents and the delivery of our current food service.

ACT Update for 2020-2021 Seniors:

Each of our 2020-2021 Senior students did not have the opportunity to take the ACT during the month of April due to Covid-19.

All Seniors WILL be able to participate and take the ACT on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 during the school day.

LPS families will receive additional information as we near the testing date.

2020-2021 Student Handbook

Below is a line to our updated 2019-2020 Student Handbook for grades Kindergarten-12. If you are not able to access a copy of the handbook online, please contact your respective office for a paper copy.

The district would strongly advise you to review the handbook as it serves as a reference for several questions you may have regarding our district. Additionally, the student handbook also outlines building procedures and policies, along with information on school times, the yearly calendar, staff members, lunch, student discipline, and school records.

Notice - Annual Asbestos Update

Federal regulations require all schools to inventory asbestos-containing materials and develop a management plan that identifies and controls asbestos-containing materials in their building. The presence of asbestos in a building does not mean that the health of the building occupants is necessarily endangered. As long as the identified material remains in good condition and is not disturbed, exposure is unlikely. Please note, at least once every six months periodic surveillance is conducted on all asbestos-containing materials and suspect material assumed to contain asbestos. A re-inspection will be conducted every three years throughout the district of all items that
