Technology Campus Chronicle
Vol. 2 No. 16
Principal's Corner
The Week Ending 12-7-18
Dear OSS Technology Campus Families,
Construction at LYNX LANE will be starting on December 10th. Please see photos below (click to enlarge) for reference on how each stage will look for traffic on Lynx Lane. Each stage should last two to three days. The hours of operation will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Following the end of each work shift, all traffic will be placed into its original configuration until the next day.
Any Elective Change Request Forms for the 2nd semester need to be filled out, signed by their parent, and returned to Ms. Wence by Friday, December 14th if any 6th grader wishes to change their elective. Please keep in mind that there are several electives on a waiting list so it is not a guaranteed change if a form is turned in. Students will receive a paper notice in their homeroom the last week before Winter Break with their 2nd semester course changes.
Sincerely,
Michael Singleton
The Technology Campus is incredibly thankful for all of our faithful readers, and for that we would like to reward our families. Moving forward we will have a NEWSLETTER QUIZ located under the Principal's corner.
Quiz completion will automatically place your student into a drawing for a Dress Down Pass. Dress Down Passes will be awarded to 10% of entries for each building. The number of entries will directly effect the amount of prizes awarded for the week. Entries selected from the lottery must be correct upon review.
We hope that you have fun, and enjoy reading this week's edition! Entries are due the morning of Monday, December 17th.

This week in Kindergarten we had a group time exploring the world of coding during Computer Science week!!! Our classes coded the alphabet, number 1-50, created dance codes and used robots!! It was awesome watching our little engineers this week explore and inquire through the world of coding!
We also explore the theme of “Reindeer” during literacy and learned that they live in some of harshest and coldest parts of the world, have the longest and farthest migration compared to any other animal and that their hairs are hollow!
We finished our week up learning about “Holidays from around the world! This week we learned about Hanukkah!

Science Fair
OSS’s science fair is an excellent opportunity for our students to explore their favorite topic in science. It provides an avenue for student research, allow students to be actively engaged in their own learning, and to use their own creativity to solve a pressing problem in an imaginative way. A science fair builds a bridge between home and school - establishing bonds between students, parents, and teachers and inspires students to become life long learners.
All forms must be typed or filled out using blue ink. NO pencil!
Mr. Stampas is the adult sponsor. Stampas@orlandoscience.org, (407) 253-7304
Form 1B is signed by the student and the parent. Besides the start date of experimentation on form 1A (10/20/17), all other forms prior to experimentation will be dated in September.
Please click the link below for full science fair description!
STEM teams Forming
We have new STEM teams forming for upcoming competitions. These teams will meet off campus. The competition dates are in December, February, and May. These are general lower cost than some of the competition teams, but some cost is required ($15 per student for the February event and about $50 per team for the May event, and money for the t-shirts if they are not donated, and kit items.) I highly suggest looking into where the coach/adults work to see if funds are available for sponsorships.
Here are the list of teams that are forming:
- Gliders (K-6)
- Math (K-6)
- Mousetrap Car (K-6)
- Water Bottle Rockets (K-6)
- Egg Drop (K-6)
- Energy Transfer Machine (Rube Goldberg) (3-6)
- Junior Solar Sprint (4-6)
- Critter Comfort Cottage (4-6)
- Solar Energy Cook-Off (4-6)
- Vex Robotics (6)
- Balsa Bridge (4-6)
Please sign up at http://bit.ly/ossenergywhizteams if you are interested in your student joining a team. Students/parents will be notified if the student is selected for a team. No coach = No team. The point of these teams is for the experience. This is our first year and there is NO pressure on coaches or teams to win. We want them to have the experience, have fun, and be engaged in STEM.
Curtis Science Competition
Are you interested in a fun science competition? There are spots open for each grade level. All you need to do is fill out the form on the link. K-4 is the Rising Stars Challenge and 5th and 6th is the Kinetic Challenge that needs a parent coach for each team. Requirements are included in the form.
Energy Whiz Competition K-6th
STEM Teams Are Forming!
Students from kindergarten to sixth grade are invited to join a STEM team. Teams will meet off campus and compete at between one to three competitions. There are eight teams to choose from! Students that are not on a competition team will have a better chance of making the team since we want to make sure that ALL students are able to compete in STEM competitions. Also, if a parent volunteers to be the coach, the student has a higher chance of being on a team.
The teams are: Mousetrap Car (K-6), Water Bottle Rockets (K-6), Egg Drop (K-6), Rube Goldberg (Energy Transfer Machine) (3-6), Junior Solar Spring (4-6), Critter Cottage (4-6), Solar Energy Cook-Off (4-6), and Vex Robotics (6).
If you would like to sign up for a team, please sign up online: http://bit.ly/ossenergywhizteams. Signing up on the form does not mean you are on a team. You will be contacted if you were chosen for a team.

Important school Reminders
Orca's Core Values and character Education
Character Education has begun at OSES and we are having a great time learning our social skills at school and the students are learning how to use these tools successfully too! This year part of our Character Education curriculum we have introduced "Operation Impact" our goal is to share and show how our students are reaching out to the communities, families and other students to show their positive character traits.
Here are a few character traits:
- Kindness
- Empathy
- Trustworthy
- Reaching Out to Others
- Building Friendships
We want to see how your children are using their character traits outside of school and featuring them each week in our weekly newsletter!! This is a great way to spotlight your child's positive influence that they have in our community and school! We look forward to seeing your pictures and experiences.
Please send a few pictures and small description of your children's activity (encourage them to write it on their own too). Pictures must be handed in on Monday's in order to make it for the Friday newsletter. They can be sent in to your child's teacher or emailed to Mrs. Krygowski at katherine.krygowski@orlandoscience.org
We can't wait to see our wonderful students putting #Operation Impact to work in our community!!!
