Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
I cannot even begin to describe the excitement at Hallinan this week. We had been looking forward to the start of school for so long - and it finally arrived with all the fanfare we had anticipated! Eager students, happy staff and a whole lot of smiling parents. It's been a great week!
We are eager to have parents and grandparents in our building volunteering! If you are interested in volunteering at Hallinan, please review the new LOSD volunteer policies under the "New Application for School Volunteers" section. All volunteers must complete the online background check annually prior to volunteering at schools. The process can take several weeks so we urge you to start today!
Thank you to the PTO for welcoming families on Monday and today!
Looking forward to an amazing year of learning,
Melissa Griffiths

After that, there will be two sessions for visiting classrooms, one from 6 to 6:30 pm and the second from 6:30 to 7 pm. The evening will commence at 7 pm. New Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.
To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System.
Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.
Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.
Volunteer Application for LOSD
Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.
SAC
We have a few open positions on our school advisory committee. This committee meets monthly with Principal Griffiths to discuss and help guide school and district goals to support students. If you are interested in serving on this committee, the application due date has been extended to Monday, 9/12. The School Board will review applications and appoint new members by the end of September. More information and applications are on the district website under School Board / Committees. Note, these positions are two year terms.
Arrival and Dismissal Reminders
Arrival for K-5:
School begins at 8:20 am and students will be allowed in the building at 8:10 am.
To ensure everyone's safety, please do not arrive at Hallinan prior to 8 am as student supervision is not available. Our staff will be outside at 8 am to welcome students and assist them out of vehicles. Students should remain in their vehicle until a staff member is present.
Car riders will exit their vehicle on the passenger side. Parents must remain in vehicles.
K-3 students will wait at the front entrance until the 8:10 am bell; 4-5 students will wait undercover until the 8:10 am bell.
Students arriving after the 8:20 am bell must check-in in the office.
Arrival for Pre-K:
School begins at 9 am.
- Pre-K students should be escorted by families to their exterior classroom door.
- Students arriving after 9:10 am must enter through the main doors and check in with office staff. Staff will escort them to their classroom.
Dismissal for K-5:
School ends at 2:40 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and at 2 pm on Thursday.
We have several options for dismissal - car rider pick-up, walker pick up, bikers, Champions after care and bus rider pick up. Please make sure your child knows their go home plan each day.
Car riders: Car riders will meet their families in front of the main entrance. Families will queue up around the circle. To move the pick up line in an efficient manner, please post a sign in your front passenger window with your child’s full name and grade, this will help us locate them and help them to your car. Families must remain in their car and students must enter the vehicle from the right passenger side. Students must be able to buckle their own seatbelt. If your child needs assistance, please park your car and meet them in the walker pick-up area.
Walkers: Teachers will drop students off at the undercover area by the playground - please meet them there.
Bikers: Will walk their bikes to the undercover area.
Champions After Care: Teachers will drop students off in the Gym.
Bus riders: Teachers will walk bus riders to their bus. Please make sure students know their bus number and bus stop number. You can find all that information HERE. Transportation is currently finalizing bus stops - we'll let you know as soon as they are completed.
The cul-de-sac by the playground is not a designated drop off and pick up area. The entire cul-de-sac is designated by the city as a no-parking zone to ensure that emergency vehicles are able to access the school if necessary. If you choose to meet your child at the undercover area, please park on the street (not in the cul de sac) and walk up.
Dismissal for Pre-K:
School ends at 3 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and at 2:30 pm on Thursday. Please pick up your students at their exterior classroom doors.

Slice of Gratitude
You have probably been wondering who organized all the supplies and delivered them to all the classrooms. Our team was able to find her some help in delivering but it was the amazing Monika Chauhan who took on this project for the entire school. If you see her around, please give her a big thanks!

Notes From Our District Nurse
Please DO NOT SEND AN ILL CHILD TO SCHOOL. This page gives examples of when your student should not be in school. If your child is ill, please contact the Hallinan Office at 503.534.2353 and leave a detailed message, or email Lee Gates - gatesl@loswego.k12.or.us and Linda Stevens - stevensl@loswego.k12.or.us
In order to keep all of our students safe, please do not plan for or send food for birthdays or other special events at school. Many students have food allergies - read more about that in the flyer below. Teachers (or the Office) must send out food notices to parents at least 3 days prior to an event, listing all foods/ingredients that will be offered at any event. Thank you for understanding.
Smart Start Follow-Up
Thank you for participating in Smart Start. We hope your student and you feel welcome and prepared to start the school year.
Thank you to all who participated in Smart Start 2022. It was a wonderful opportunity specifically for our students with 504s and IEPs, and their parents/guardians, to make introductions with their teachers.
Smart Start is hosted every year, and feedback about your experience is very helpful for planning the event. Please share your input in the follow-up survey -- your responses are appreciated by Tuesday, Sept. 6. Smart Start 2022 Survey
Fall i-Ready
This Fall, all students in Grades 1-5 will complete two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. i-Ready is a diagnostic assessment that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform and tailor instruction to accelerate growth. This is the first of three i-Ready assessments we give each year. In Lake Oswego, the Fall i-Ready window is open through September 16.

Set Up Meal Accounts, Applications
The universal free meals waiver with USDA expired on June 30, 2022. That means starting this school year LOSD will be serving meals under the free, reduced, and paid categories.
Please be sure to set up your student's meal account or apply for free/reduced meals. Look for Meals under Find it Fast on district and school website homepages for account setup and application information, and more.
Be Ready to Ride the Bus
Student Transportation of America provides bus transportation for LOSD. Our bus drivers look forward to getting to know your child and being a part of their amazing school experience.
Students who live further than 1 mile away from their resident elementary school and 1.5 miles away from their resident middle or high school are eligible for transportation services. However, service is typically provided closer to avoid crossing major thoroughfares.
Bus registration is not necessary. Access points -- or what most call bus stops -- will be available by mid-August. Look for an email from LOSD notifying you when access points are posted under Transportation on the district and school websites.
Help prepare your child to ride the bus. Select the access point(s) that work best for your family.
Visit your access point before school starts to familiarize your child with their stop.
Look for visual clues to help identify when it’s their time to get off the bus.
Kindergarteners need an adult to greet them off the bus. Bus drivers are obligated to return unattended kindergarteners to school for safekeeping. Please be sure to be at your child’s stop ahead of time to help keep the bus moving for all onboard.
State Assessments Notice
The Oregon Department of Education publishes an annual notice regarding state assessments in English Language Arts and math. Please review the Annual Notice for Statewide Tests for information about why participation matters, the right to opt out, and test windows.
September
Hispanic Heritage Month pays tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.
Deaf Awareness Month is intended to increase public awareness about the issues affecting deaf people and deaf culture as a whole.
National Suicide Prevention Month is an effort to inform and engage health professionals and the general public about suicide prevention and warning signs of suicide.
Safe Oregon
Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
