Silver Knight Nominees
The Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards program recognizes exceptional high school seniors for their unique and remarkable community service and academic achievements. This year, Riviera is proud to announce our 2021 Silver Knight award nominees: Bradley Cohen-Music, Natalia Guedes-Drama, Aidala Pomajevich-Science, Riley Simon-General Scholarship, and Jenna Weber-Social Studies. To be eligible to apply for the Silver Knight award, students must have maintained a 3.2 unweighted grade point average and applied their exceptional knowledge and impressive talents contributing significant service to their schools and communities. These students will need to complete a lengthy application as well as undergo a rigorous interview process to be chosen for this prestigious award. This program was started by the Miami Herald in 1959 and has been providing awards and scholarships to thousands of students throughout the years. Over 700 students will be nominated from all over Miami-Dade and Broward County, but only 15 winners from each county will take home the coveted plaque and scholarship awards. At Riviera Preparatory School, many of our students have competed and won this prestigious award for their innovative and impressive projects. The moderator, Ms. Danielle Rivero, has been helping students for many years to prepare for this prestigious award. We are exceedingly proud and wish all these nominees the best outcome.

Ingenious Bulldogs with Ms. Kemper
Ms. Kemper’s AP World History class allows students to create well-rounded outlooks, rather than learning just one side of history. In a recent assignment, students were prompted to offer perspectives on Christopher Columbus as both a hero and a villain. Most noticeably, the creativity in the projects demonstrates the adaptability that has become so valuable in digital times, as well as attention to detail. As for the information, topics ranging from wealth for the Spanish to abuse of the Native Americans demonstrated a multidimensional understanding of the explorer. By giving students a thought-provoking topic, along with an environment in which civil discourse is encouraged, young minds are invited to challenge a commonly accepted account of history. However, this comes as no surprise, given that the class is filled with hardworking students and led by one of Riviera’s most dedicated teachers. The work ethic and interest demonstrated in this class are truly refreshing, and we are so proud of their hard work!

Here's a project to satisfy your sweet tooth...
This week in Mrs. Horne’s class, students were asked to bring in their favorite candy from home to create a still life. After the students brought in their favorite treats, they used their observational skills and newly refined color blending techniques to recreate this delicious still life as if it were a photograph. Here’s the catch -- students had to observe every little detail, which included every highlight, shadow, letter/wording, and fold. These pieces aren’t fully ready to be displayed, but the pictures of works in progress below will leave your tummy wanting more.
