Reading & Language Workshop
Readers are finishing up our INVESTIGATION unit this week. We have certainly enjoyed learning what a mystery is and all of the elements that are put together to create a well done mystery. Readers have been reading mysteries in the literature discussion groups as well as in Language Workshop. It has been a lot of fun, and the kids are sad to see this unit come to an end. Ask your child about their favorite mystery book that they read in the INVESTIGATION unit…. The Wretched Stone? The Mysteries of Harris Burdick? Ace Lacewing? The Mary Celeste? The Mystery of Eatum Hall? Or was it one that they read for their LDG? It may also be the one that their teacher is using as a read aloud for lessons! So many titles to choose from!
Our next unit will be PERSPECTIVE. The essential question for this unit is, “What influences perspective.” There are many well written books that kids will be digging into in both LDGs and in Language Workshop that will provide opportunities for growth and understanding of this essential question.
Math Workshop
Mathematicians have done a nice job converting decimals to fractions and decimals to fractions. They have also added unlike denominator fractions (tenths and hundredths) and have compared decimals. We all know we would rather have 0.80 cents in our pockets than 0.08 cents! This unit has wrapped up and we will start the beginning stages of Geometry! Mathematicians will once again see how flexible their thinking is as we move from the more abstract (paper, pencil & symbols) to concrete (manipulatives and models) learning.

Writing Workshop
Students will be wrapping up their Narrative Mystery Writing Unit soon. This unit aligns with our district’s Language Workshop Unit, Investigations. Students learned how to add details to their writing which includes - character development, clues, red herrings, suspension/tension, dialogue, and plot development. After the Mystery Unit is complete, we will be moving into the Informational - Bringing History to Life Unit!! Ask your child to share their writing, they have worked so hard!
