We also welcome shoe boxes to help package the shoes if you have them. All of the shoes from our drive will go into micro-enterprise programs in developing countries around the world. This is also a perfect example of how to reuse items we have instead of throwing them away!

A Month of Math Learning in May
Math, much like reading, is something we all use every day without even realizing it. This month, we hope to help your student see math in a different light as we explore different math concepts.
This week we'll look at pi and estimation.
The definition of pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. It is an irrational number that goes on forever and never repeats. Kind of mind boggling! Yet, pi is used in so many fields for so many different reasons. Pi can measure an ocean wave and a sound wave, pi is used in designing pendulums for clocks or when studying the structure of the eye. Pi is used in science, engineering, chemistry, architecture, construction, etc. Clearly, pi has great value to our world. Click here for some more fun pi facts.
Estimation is a valuable skill for students to learn. Why? It can show that your student understands a mathematical concept by forcing them to think about a process. Estimating can be done mentally and is convenient in everyday life--for example when calculating a tip or deciding how much food you need at Thanksgiving. Estimating strengthens problem solving and logic skills by requiring a strategy. It helps your student learn to come up with a reasonable answer.
Estimation Jar Contest:
To inspire your student to begin estimating, we have our own estimation jars! The winner in each category will win the estimation jar pictured!
Have fun!

Testing
CAASPP Testing - STAR 360 - You should have received your STAR 360 login information last week. If you did not receive yours, please reach out to your HST. This is our school's internal assessment and is the way we show growth. Our school does not share individual student scores with anyone outside our school. This is also a very useful tool, when planning for next year and evaluating the curriculum you have been using. Results can be given as soon as your student completes it.
CAASPP update - As of Friday we were at 86% tested. We still need to test another 200 students, before reaching our required 95%. We are so thankful to our families who have completed these tests as it is important to the viability of our school. In order for a score report to be generated, a student must complete both the computer adaptive test (multiple choice) and the performance task (full write) of each subject.
****Impact of Non-tested Students and Accountability for the CAASPP****
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires that at least 95 percent of all students and student groups must test in English language arts/literacy (ELA), mathematics, and science. Schools that do not meet the participation rate requirement will incur a penalty in the calculation of the Academic Indicator in the California School Dashboard. The penalty will be applied by assigning the Lowest Obtainable Scale Score (LOSS) for each student needed to bring the LEA, school, or student group up to the 95 percent participation rate target.
After a two-year testing disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, 2022 is the first year when the federal participation rate penalty will be applied in the California School Dashboard in both ELA and mathematics. Keep in mind that this new methodology could result in LEAs and schools receiving a lower status level than in prior years.
CPA has a website designed especially for our parents that talks about all the assessments we give throughout the year.
Want to tell our California legislators your thoughts on testing? A member of the public can submit public comments on a proposed regulation by: submitting written comments to the Regulations Coordinator; or by attending the public hearing and submitting written and/or oral comments. All comments must be made during a public comment period in order to be considered by the rulemaking agency, e.g., the California Department of Education (CDE) or the State Board of Education (SBE). More information can be found here. You can also let your local representative your thoughts on AB 1505 by reaching out to them directly. You can find your local representative here.

HOMESCHOOL MONDAY: 5 TIPS FOR STARTING STRONG EACH WEEK
Believe me, I get it. Mondays can be rough. Before I became a homeschool mom, my Monday mantra was this: Mondays are a terrible way to spend 1/7th of your life. Aren’t you thankful that a homeschool Monday doesn’t have carry that dread? While there’s still some hustle and busyness that comes with starting a new week, you can enter your homeschool Monday prepared, renewed, and ready to keep calm and homeschool on.
I no longer dread Monday. In fact, it’s my favorite day of the week. Your schedule may be different from mine, but Monday is the only day each week that I don’t have responsibilities outside of my home. If there’s any day I can embrace, it’s Monday.
Maybe that’s not the case for you. Maybe homeschool Mondays are downright overwhelming in your home. Maybe your Mondays feel chaotic instead of accomplished. Just know that it doesn’t have to be that way.
It’s easier than you might think to take back your Mondays and start strong each week. Here are 5 tips for starting strong as you homeschool Monday..............keep reading here

Hi, I am a Mother of 4 sons, and grandma of 3 little ones. I learned about homeschooling about 5 years ago and I loved the whole concept. I homeschooled my youngest son and he loved it! I wish I had known this way of teaching when my other sons were little. I love helping families to thrive, and be successful! I am here to help you in any way I can.
