Faculty NTI Update
Erpenbeck Elementary
Update for March 27th
From Your Principal, Mrs. Pass
With all this fives and Friday talk, let's talk about another "F". NO- not THAT F! You guys are crazy.
Let's talk about feedback.
We all know from our experience in the classroom that feedback is one of THE MOST important factors in student learning. No need to elaborate there.
So what is the expectation for giving feedback on NTI days?
Obviously,. the more feedback you can give your students, the more they will learn, as long as it is being received and digested. When the students are with us at school, we can control the environment in which the students receive our feedback. We can make sure we have a relationship of trust and respect so the students are comfortable and accepting of feedback. We can ensure that distractions are at a minimum and students can act on the feedback to solidify the learning that comes from it. We can't ensure that those things are happening when we give feedback during NTI days.
I am also worried about your mental health and sustainability as your teaching world has been "flipped" (no pun intended for all of you familiar with a flipped class) upside down.
For these reasons, we need to redefine our school expectations for feedback and how we/when we are giving it.
- Students should receive meaningful feedback once a week on the focus standard for reading and math. That means that the expectation is TWO pieces of meaningful feedback on the focus standards a week. I know many of you are doing more than this, so I wanted to make sure you understood this.
- Students do not need to receive feedback on every assignment. These assignments should be considered practice for the formative/summative assessment on the focus standard (which may be just a few questions).
- Idea: Post the writing rubrics when assigning writing and encourage the students/parents (depending on the age) to measure the writing against one specific part of the rubric.
- If you need to cut down on anecdotal feedback when you receive work, like "Good job- I can tell you worked hard on this" to have more time to focus on giving kids feedback that will move the needle and improve their understanding of the focus standard, that is totally OK! This is a great thing to say to kids, and you can totally still do this. But, if you are feeling overwhelmed with responding, make sure your responses count.
You guys are doing GREAT work. Make sure you are reminding yourself to disconnect and do something for YOU as much as you can. You can't fill from an empty cup.

Mustang Shout-Out!
Kathy Hammonds is the BOMB! She created a reteach lesson on personification with videos and an exit slip for students to show that they understand the concept better. I'm so grateful for her!!

Facilities Update
No one is to use school facilities until further notice. The gym, playground, etc. is closed as we look to mitigate the spread of the virus.
NTI EES Mustang Library
Don't forget to share the code for the Google Classroom for the “NTI EES-Mustang Library.” The code is 73dqg6h. You will find four topics with different activities, resources, and goals. It is my hope that both students and teachers find it helpful and enriching. There are several really good read-alouds by various artists under the topic, “Hangout with an author, illustrator, and others!” I will be adding more on a daily basis.

Updates from Mrs. K
Hey Guys,
Lots of questions about getting videos shared properly and quickly. For me the fastest way to do this is using You Tube. If you list the videos as “UNLISTED” as shown in the video, they will not appear on your channel and can only be accessed with the link.
I’ve created two videos if you are interested in learning how:
1. Uploading videos to YouTube https://youtu.be/wt9_tW_xW44
2. Uploading straight to YouTube from Screencastify https://youtu.be/pE3Id-zajA0
If you have any questions let me know.

Looking for helpful tips with Canvas, Google Classroom, Google Hangouts/Meet and more…….check out this website!
This resource is also linked in the Chrome browser under the Boone bookmarks and is named Distance Learning Tools HELP!
Most sessions will be recorded. If you can’t hop on live – check back for the recording!
More will be added as we navigate the NTI days together. If you have a resource you would like to see added to the list, complete the form linked on the website.
Important Info on Video/Picture Permissions
o If you have students without video/picture permission, I would recommend contacting the parent to ask if it is OK for the students to participate “in class” with their video on knowing that the lesson may be recorded and available to students to play back at another time.
o Reports have been made that students are entering meetings after the official meeting has ended and having their own conversations. To prevent this, teachers can remove the meeting link from their classroom, website or wherever it was posted.
o There is great importance in students seeing each other and having their video cameras enabled; however, we just don’t want to put ourselves in a bad situation when a parent has not agreed to video/picture permissions. We are most likely educating many parents on this online learning too!
From Your Assistant Principal, Mr. S
Student Behavior Norms & Procedures for Google Hangouts
The same behavioral expectations of the classroom apply to online learning.
When in a Google Hangout you are in a classroom.
Unmuting and talking is like calling out and interrupting in class.
Having side conversations in the chat bar is like talking to a friend while the teacher is teaching.
Unnecessary comments (not related to the topic or side conversations) in the chat can distract your peers and also prevent your teacher from seeing helpful questions or comments related to the discussion
Expected Behaviors In Google Hangouts
-Students will mute upon entering and only unmute when directed to by teacher
-Students will stay on topic and participate
-Student will only use the chat feature to contribute to the class conversation. No side conversations or off topic posts.
-Students will be respectful to all other participants (teachers and students)
Consequences
-Redirection from teacher/reminder of procedure not being followed.
-Removal from chat for that day
-Parent contact
Digital Citizenship
Digital Citizenship is showing your Mustang Pride online - making sure we are safe, respectful, and responsible while online and working at home.

Smeckens Remote Learning Webinar
Per district office, teachers and Staff should not discuss any health concerns with students during NTI, whether it be their own Covid19 health concerns or the health concerns of others. As more virus testing produces more diagnosis, we want to be clear with staff what is appropriate when talking with students. All specific questions about this should be directed to Kathy Reutman.
Google has heard teachers and made changes to Hangout Meet!

I hope everyone is staying healthy and washing their hands. If I can help you in anyway or if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me at aimee.lind@boone.kyschools.us.
Here are some links with some good information. The youtube video is a good one and answers a lot of questions that our kids might be asking. Try staying off social media, it is overwhelming and not always the most up to date and accurate information.
