Edward Hargraves was a sailor, publican, shopkeeper, adventurer and a gold prospector. He was born in Skipton in England in 1816. He came to Sydney in 1832 by a boat. He weighted 114 kilograms. He was 74 when he died in 1891.
Why was he a significant person in the gold rush?
In 1851 after being in California Edward Hargraves arrived back in to Australia to pan for gold. When he went to Bathurst he found gold ! He started an Australia gold rush. He called the goldfield Ophir. People from Sydney went to bathust to try and find lots of gold. Hargraves got a reward for himself for telling the people where he found the gold.
