Top 10 Cardinal Celebrations
2. Over 300 dads attended the 3rd annual Donuts with Dad event at Henry Elementary today! A HUGE shout-out to Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare who donated all 62 dozen donuts and to the United Methodist Church and Clinton Fire Department for sending volunteers!
3. Congratulations to the CHS boys basketball team who received 3rd place at the Pleasant Hill Tournament last weekend. Congrats also to Mia Mills and Trey Miller who were named to the All-Tournament Team!
4. Thank you to the Ladies Auxilary VFW Post 1894 who held a Bingo fundraiser and donated $500 to the student leadership group, SkillsUSA. This generous donation will be used by SkillsUSA to defray costs of student leadership conferences and competitions.
5. Congrats to the CMS boys basketball team who earned a 5th place trophy at the John Boise Tournament.
6. Way to go Clinton Early Childhood Center! CECC just underwent their license renewal process and were found to be in compliance in every area!
7. An exciting initiative has been benefiting our district's students thanks to CHS para, Connie Kidd. Connie has been collecting unopened food items that would otherwise be discarded at breakfast and lunch and seeing that they are provided to classrooms and programs in the district. To add to this, Clinton Intermediate School is beginning their own "Share Table" where students can donate unopened FDA approved food items to be shared with students who need it, rather than throwing it away!
8. Thank you to the Clinton Literacy Council who donated 200 books to Parents As Teachers! These books will be given to PAT families during visits.
9. In the last 6 years Henry Elementary has increased its numbers of regular volunteers from 1 to over 100! Thanks to the Bright Futures program who has had much to do with this drastic increase!
10. Cardinal Coop teachers, Annisa Bracher and Amy Gardner, have started a new Twitter challenge with their students' families. A question is posed everyday for parents to ask their students at home! What a great way to connect school and home, and allow parents to be a part of their child's school day!

Did you make a resolution for 2018? Warning: More than half of all resolutions fail, but this year, they don’t have to be yours. Each year I indulge in the age old tradition of setting resolutions and then watching them fail to become reality. Don’t get me wrong, I see some improvement while the “iron is hot” but my resolve fizzles and I return to what I have always done. A lot of these resolutions fail because they’re not the right resolutions. And a resolution may be wrong for one of three main reasons:
1. It’s a resolution created based on what someone else (or society) is telling you to change.
2. It’s too vague.
3. You don’t have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution.
In education we set SMART goals for our students based on data. Your goals should be smart — and SMART. That’s an acronym coined in the journal Management Review in 1981 for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. It works for education and it can also work in setting your resolutions, too.
Here’s an example of a SMART goal for a 3rd grade math class:
For the 2017-18 school year, all of my students will demonstrate measurable growth in mathematics. Each student will improve their performance by at least 40% points on the grade 3 End of Year (EOY) mathematics assessment. The EOY serves as a summative assessment that measures their knowledge of grade 3 math content.
Instructional Strategies and Evidence
Strategy: Create language objectives for each math lesson and incorporate the use of sentences frames.
Evidence: Students will refer to sentence frames during class discussions and be able to represent their thinking orally and in writing.
Strategy: Utilize anchor charts of content and strategies taught throughout the school year.
Evidence: Students will readily reference the anchor charts throughout the various units of study during the school year.
So, if you want your New Year's Resolution to succeed try to set your goal using the same procedure!

Payroll and Benefits Info from Emily Brown
Hello CSD!
I hope you all enjoyed the holiday break and have had a great New Year so far!!
You’re probably wondering where your W-2’s are! I will be distributing them a.s.a.p! I do have until the 31st of Jan, but am hoping to get them done sooner than that. I will be distributing them to your buildings and an email will be sent out when you can expect them.
I am so sorry we had to cancel our health risk assessments on January 12th. Our Wellness Team travels from Springfield, and if Springfield school districts are closed, they cancel events. Please note, I am working on getting us a new date. Leaning towards February 2nd or the 27th of Feb. We had quite a few sign up! I am hoping we get the same turnout. Once a date is set, I’ll send out information regarding the process of confirming your original timeslot or getting a new one. I am so sorry for the inconvenience!
You will also start seeing emails each month with the subject line ‘MET Monthly Wellness Newsletter’ that provides a simple link to our monthly newsletter our Wellness Team provides. In fact, anytime you see an email from Lindsey Ackerson at CoxHealth, know it is in regards to our MET Wellness Program. Just a heads up for those of you questioning emails received…
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the above information or anything else regarding payroll and benefits!
THANKS!!!
Emily
It's a Great Day to be a Cardinal
The Clinton Intermediate School Archery Team is in its 7th year of competition. Students in 4th and 5th grade learn about archery in PE class and then are able to try out for the team in late November. This year the team has a lot of new faces and the school is excited to see each of them improve during the season.
The first tournament was held last Saturday at CHS. The CIS students competed with approximately 70 elementary students from 7 other elementary school teams. The CIS team finished in 1st place with a score of 2,656. Kason Himes took home a 2nd place medal while Michael Chapa finished in 3rd place for elementary boys. Jacey Peery finished in 2nd place for elementary girls with a personal best score.
Tournaments are held most Saturdays during the months of January and February, leading up to the STATE Tournament in late March. The team's score of 2,656 from Saturday’s tournament has allowed them to continue their 6 year qualifying streak for the State Tournament. If you would like to see what archery in the schools is all about, come out to CHS this Saturday and watch a round or two. The elementary students will be shooting at 9:00 and 10:00.

Nathan Shares his Story
Nathan was asked to speak to students during their DUDE Be Nice assembly. Nathan helped students understand that even if they are struggling, they can achieve anything. Students left knowing they get to be the legacy of their lives and do not have to be stuck in the cycle of their family.
Way to go Nathan!
