No School 11/25 - 11/29 Happy Thanksgiving
With Thanksgiving break approaching, to ensure a more efficient way for you to check your child out of school during the day, the following procedure should be followed:
- In an effort to avoid interrupting instructional time on the intercom, students MUST have a note designating the time that they should meet you in the front office.
- Notes should be brought to the front office in the morning for authorization. The signed note will allow your child leave class at the designated time and meet you in the front office.
- Students without notes will not be called out of class until the parent arrives. (For example, we will not call them out of class when you call from your car). For this reason, you may experience delays if your child does not have a note giving prior notification of the early dismissal.
- Transportation changes must be made prior to 3:00 p.m.
- No check-outs without a note after 3:30 p.m.
Your cooperation with our check out procedure will help keep classroom interruptions to a minimum and will get you on your way in a timely manner.

ACADEMIC UPDATES
Math
7On Math
We are still working on Inequalities and will have a quiz on Friday over 1-step inequalities. After Thanksgiving break, we will finish up Unit 2 with 2-step inequalities.
7A Math
We are finishing up Unit 2 on Two-Step Equations and One and Two-Step Inequalities. A study guide for the math test went home last week and is due on Wednesday. We will have a test over this material on Thursday, November 21st. After Thanksgiving break, we will applying this knowledge with a real-world project using two-step equations.
Math 8A
We have finished Unit 3 on the Pythagorean Theorem and volume on Tuesday. Wednesday we will begin Unit 4: Relations and Functions. This is a very short unit on understanding and comparing the properties of functions. The test for this unit will be Thursday, December 12th. After the test, we will be reviewing for our cumulative final. When we come back from our break in January, we have 2 units left of 8th grade material, then we move on to prepare them for a better understanding of the 9th grade curriculum. The year is moving fast!
Social Studies
Social Studies is excited to be moving into our Government Unit. Students recently took a pre-test so that they can be placed in work groups which best suit their needs based on prior knowledge about world government. All students will have a Government test on Wednesday 11/13. After that we will move into our cross-curricular unit with ELA classes and read Amal Unbound in preparation for our author visit on 12/6. Thank you to everyone who has already secured a copy of the novel for their child.
Science
We will have a genetics quiz this Thursday, November 21 in science. The quiz will cover genetics vocabulary, asexual/sexual reproduction, mitosis/meiosis and Punnett squares. We will be reviewing these topics in class, but you should also see your child studying ISN pages at home.
Our genetics test is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11. Look for a study guide coming home this week. The students can use the study guide to help them prepare for the quiz and test.
We hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving! After Thanksgiving break, we will be studying sex-linked traits, pedigree charts and selective breeding
Thanks! Ms. Johnson, Ms. Kane, Ms. Moore, Ms. Chereck, Ms. Villiume, and Ms. Fairlie
Reading
Reading classes are wrapping up a study of “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. We will now begin working with nonfiction/informational texts using signposts to help us comprehend the texts with deeper clarity. Want more information on the signposts? Check out https://www.heinemann.com/products/e05080.aspx for an overview.
We’ll preview this work with the “Three Big Questions” that help readers with any nonfiction texts: 1) What surprised me? 2) What did the author think I already knew? and 3) What challenged, changed, or confirmed what I knew?
We hope you have a great Thanksgiving break. We are thankful for students, Autrey Mill, and books!
What’s on your bookshelf? Here’s what we’ve been reading lately.
Language Arts
ELA is continuing our cross-curricular unit with social studies featuring the novel “Amal Unbound.” As students read this novel in class, we will be providing instruction on objective summaries (RI2) and narrative point of view (RL6) to tie the unit together. When we return from Thanksgiving break, we will have finished the novel, and will move into the summative assessment for this unit – the creation of an informative text - in the form of an infographic - that relates to a topic found in “Amal Unbound.” This infographic will feature real data and statistics researched by students, include a central idea and supporting details, and use graphs, charts, and maps to contextualize real information about the student’s topic. Later that week, we will get the opportunity to listen to the author of the novel, Aisha Saeed, as she visits AMMS and speaks to our 7th grade students!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Patel, Mrs. Barksdale, Ms. Irvin, Mrs. Barnes, and Mrs. Matthews

Spanish
¡Hola padres!
We hope you are looking forward to the upcoming break with your student. This week, students are taking assessments on their knowledge of AR verbs with a quiz and writing PBA. We are almost finished with this semester’s content in our second unit - Lección 2. After the break, your child will be learning how to express likes and dislikes using the verb “gustar.” This will be the final topic of the unit for the semester. In addition, we will continue reading our book in class for Lunes Lees (Reading Monday). Students will also have the opportunity to reflect on their writing skills as we review written PBAs. Please continue to encourage your child to study vocabulary and notes at least 20 minutes per day. The repetition at home is essential for your child’s success in Spanish! We wish you a fun and safe holiday break.
Muchas gracias,
Srta. Brown, Sra. Clark & Srta. Underwood

French Club meets Wednesday November 20th and then Wednesday December 4th.
Merci!
