Lions Ledger
Patriot Elementary School September 2018
Message from the Principal
Dear Patriot Families,
Thank you for supporting our Back to School Night, Volunteer Meetings, PTO Kick-Off, DOGS Meeting, and much more! Patriot is off to a roaring start and it is hard to believe school has only been in session for three weeks. We are excited to have students back in the classroom and enthusiastic about learning. Many students have just completed the beginning of the year assessments, and the data will be used to drive classroom instruction and intervention. At Patriot, we strive for excellent academic achievement for all students.
As we approach the month of September, please remember to check the weekly notices, the monthly newsletter, and Patriot's Facebook page. Please also know Patriot's administration team is available to answer any questions and accept feedback so we may only continue to strive to improve Patriot Elementary. Our two assistant principals, Kathrin Polyefko and Lisa Bizzell, are tremendous assets to the Patriot community. Make note of the weekly happenings and social skills trait.
September is also Attendance Awareness Month! Research shows the benefit of great school attendance and learning. If children don’t show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. It is an honor to serve as the principal of Patriot Elementary and please let me know if you need any assistance.
This month kicks off our School Accountability and Accreditation Committee and PTO elections. Invites for volunteer events will also be sent out, be on the lookout. Looking forward to partnering with our families and the community as we continue success for all students!
Patriot proud,
Michelle Canon

We Need You!!
D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Schools) was created by Patriot Staff to promote dads and positive male role models of students to help at our school. We have reserved dates we can use individuals at drop-off and pick-up, reading to students, and helping at recess. Patriot encourages any participation and we will send out messages to ask for volunteers. Research shows the importance of fathers and father-figures in the school setting, and the positive impact it has on academic, social/emotional, and linguistic success. Contact Mrs. Polyefko for more information at kpolyefko@ffc8.org.

From the Nurse
Good Morning Patriot Parents! It's that time of year for vision and hearing screening. These screenings will be done on September 20th, 21st, and 24th. If your child wears glasses, please make sure they bring or wear them on these days especially. Also remember that this is just a screening and not an in depth eye exam like one might expect at an optometry office. Once the screenings are finished, you may get a vision referral form sent home if any deficits were found in your child's vision.
Remember:
1: 1 in 10 children have a vision problems significant enough to impact learning
2: 20/20 means that a child can see at a distance but may lack skills needed for learning such as focusing, tracking, and coordination.
3: This basic school screening can help indicate that there is some problem with a child's vision that needs to be addressed.
