By Sherman Alexie
Summery
A 13-14 year old teen named Arnold Spirit Jr. Who lived on a reservation and is being bullied at school and at home by neighbors and kids at school for being different. His only friend on the reservation.is Rowdy because they found a lot of things in common. Rowdy protects Arnold and also argues with him from time to time but they were insuperable, that is until Arnold changed schools and then Rowdy became his worst enemy. Arnold makes some new friends named Roger, Gordy, Penelope, and Coach. A quote from the story is,"'If you stay on this reservation' Mr.P said.'They're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We're all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever'". This was said when Arnold and Mr.P were talking about Arnold's future.
"The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" | 60second Book Review
Character Analysis
The main character is Arnold Spirit. He was born with "water on the brain" as he stated in the book on page #1. He is 5 ft tall and is skinny, has black hair, and wears glasses.
Conflict and Resolution
The conflict is Character vs. Society. This is because he is battling society for peace and kindness. The way he solved his problem was by going to a new school in general. This did help a lot because he got away from the bulling at school but not in the world. He was still bullied when he walked on the street and when he played basked ball. After a while almost every one forgave him and stopped bulling him. In the book on page #210 it says,"I reached out and touched Rowdy's shoulder. Big mistake. he punched me. Well, he almost punched me. He threw a punch but he MISSED."
Theme
Bulling because he was bulled for being different so he moved to a different school and never got pocked on there until he came back to the reservation where his friend and neighbors called him a trader.
Textual Evidence
One of the best and most important part to me is the first paragraph of the first chapter because it goes right in to details about the main character. It states, "I was born with water on the brain. Okay, so that's not exactly true. I was born with to much cerebral spinal fluid inside my skull. But cerebral spinal fluid is just the doctors' fancy way of saying brain grease. And brain grease works inside the lobes like a car grease works inside an engine. It keeps things running smooth and fast. But weirdo me, I was born with to much grease inside my skull, and it got all thick and muddy and disgusting, and it only mucked up the works. Mr thinking and breathing and living engine slowed down and flooded."
Book Review
I would give the book 5 stars. I would do this because this book is a really interesting book and I could not put it down until it was done. This book tells the reader about what happened to a 13-14 year old because he was born with a disability.
