Fern Creek US History

Letter to Parents for 2015-16

Changes in our grading system

We have implemented changes to our grading system in US History for the 2013-2014 school year. These changes are to ensure that our students are meeting rigorous state and national standards and achieving college and career readiness benchmarks. Your student will be tested on six key skills/standards as well as content knowledge of United States History. The percentage breakdown will be as follows:

  1. Formative work (classwork, quizzes etc.) which demonstrate the following skills will be 10% each.

A. Primary Sources (written and oral)

B. Analyzing and Interpreting charts, graphs and maps

C. Interpreting political cartoons

D. Identifying cause and effect relationships

E. Analyzing historical events in multiple perspectives

F. Matching foreign and domestic events to presidents’ terms of office

2. Your student’s reflective grades (class participation, note taking, homework, etc.) will equal 20%

3. Proficiency grades (end of unit exams) will be the remaining 20%

Upcoming Potential Field Trip

We are working on having a field trip approved to see the Revenant, the new film starring Leo Dicaprio about a frontiersman who is mauled by a bear and left for dead. It has a rating of R due to violence and graphic content so a permission slip will be necessary. Look for more information in the upcoming weeks.

ESD and Remediation

Students will be asked, specifically, to stay with me on either Wednesdays or Thursdays for Extended School Days. If invited, your child is not in trouble or anything...however, they are at risk of failing and need a bit of extra attention after school. ESD is held from 2:30 to 3:30. Please let me know if there are issues with this.
