Digital Newsletter for Chehalem Elementary School
May 2018
Dear Chehalem Families,
Spring is in the air as we countdown the final weeks of school. There is a sense of excitement and energy for both students and staff. Just a reminder that our school year goes a little later this year, with school ending on Tuesday, June 19th (full day), so please plan your summer schedule accordingly.
We recently had our volunteer appreciation celebration. I want to publicly thank the 111 volunteers who have volunteered almost 3192 hours of time this year. We especially want to thank the volunteers who put in the greatest number of hours: Carrie Andrews came in first place with over 500 hours of service. We also had 7 other volunteers with over 100 hours including Suzen Lundquist, Andy Hebert, Cari Mestas, Sara Spera, Kate Gingell, Heather Balzer, and Ellie Clang. Much thanks and appreciation to each and every person who volunteers in our building. We couldn’t do it without you!!
We are celebrating staff appreciation week the first week in May. We celebrate both our certified and classified staff members at the same time, as we are all on the same team. Please have your child write a little note of appreciation if a staff member has done something special to support your child. We have an amazing staff here that I am so thankful to work with each and every day. Also, thank you to the fantastic PTO for providing special treats and activities during the week. The staff are so excited!
State testing continues for grades three through five. Our English Language Proficiency Assessment data are coming in and our kids are making good progress. So proud of all of the student’s hard work. Our 5th grade science preliminary scores are in and our students are scoring above the district average!
Attached to this newsletter you will find a Parent Input Form for next year’s teacher input. While you cannot request a specific teacher, we like to be able to consider your input before making classroom placements. Please return the forms by June 19th.
Happy Spring!

Mayo, 2017
¡Feliz primavera!

BEAVERTON SCHOOL DISTRICT PILLARS OF LEARNING: WE EMBRACE EQUITY
**WE build honest, safe, and inclusive relationships with our diverse students and their families.
**WE provide needed support so that every child succeeds.
There are many factors that are considered when placing students in classrooms. We strive to match student learning styles with teaching styles. Additionally, classrooms are balanced by gender, second language skills, special education, talented and gifted and behavioral needs. Careful consideration is given when each classroom placement is made.
Your input is welcome in this process before placements are made. Once placements occur, we will not move students. Your perspective provides an additional lens in which we can understand the unique needs of your child.
We do not accept requests for specific teachers. This year’s teacher will read this form and make an initial recommendation. The principal will make final decisions on classroom configuration and placement.
The Parent Input Form is attached below in English and Spanish. Hard copies are available in the Chehalem school office. We thank you, in advance, for taking the time to share your thoughts. Please return completed forms by Tuesday, June 19th.
Beaverton School District Public Safety Resources
Student and staff safety is a priority in the Beaverton School District. WE are committed to providing all of our students and families with safe, caring and inclusive learning environments. A safe school is one where the educational climate fosters a spirit of acceptance and care for all students. A safe school is also one that is prepared to respond when an emergency arises.
Weather events, fire, earthquakes, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that we are training students, teachers, staff and administration for, in partnership with our first responders. In Beaverton, we collaborate with many community partners to review and enhance the District’s safety practices, emergency readiness and response.
It is important for parents and guardians to be aware of and familiar with the District’s safety policies and protocols, and to talk with their students about school safety.
Please visit the District’s Public Safety webpage, where you can find many resources on school safety, including:
- Earthquake Information
- Emergency Drill Information
- Emergency Operations Plans
- Emergency Protocol
- Inclement Weather Information
- SafeOregon Tipline
- Safe Routes to School
The District uses SchoolMessenger to communicate general, attendance notifications, and emergency broadcasts to parents, guardians, students and staff. Parents/guardians can customize their communication preferences in SchoolMessenger InfoCenter to ensure the most effective delivery of messages.
For parents who would like to change or set their contact preferences for emergency alerts and other mass notification broadcasts, visit the SchoolMessenger page.

Beaverton School District Calendar for 2018-2019
Just a reminder… The start date for the 2018-2019 school year is Monday, August 27, 2018. This information was first published in June 2016 following the announcement of collaboration time and the addition of nine student days over three years.
Starting before Labor Day is a change in practice, so we want to make sure parents are aware. Please download the calendar below, or visit the District calendar webpage to view other important dates and calendars in several other languages.
Multilingual Instructional Materials Review
The Beaverton School District is currently involved in the English Language Proficiency Instructional Materials Adoption process K-12. The Project Team, comprised of community members, students, teachers, administrators and specialists has been meeting since September 2017 to review existing multilingual curriculum and practices in order to make curriculum and adoption recommendations to the School Board this Spring. The Beaverton School District reviews and updates its curriculum, instructional practices, and classroom materials according to Board policy and Oregon State Statute and Administrative Regulations.
Community members, parents, students, and Beaverton School District staff are invited to review and provide input on instructional materials from 8-4pm the week of May 7-11, 2018 at the Multilingual Department Capital Center (18640 NW Walker Road, Entrance B, Beaverton, OR 97006). Materials will also be available for viewing from 5-7pm on Monday, May 7th and Thursday, May 10th in the same location. There will be an opportunity to submit feedback on the materials. Visit our website for all materials related to the adoption process.
