Definition
A sever irreversible loss of cognitive function resulting from changes to the structure and or damage to the brain
age/gender specific
- most common with people of old age
- most commonly found in women because they live longer
Symptoms
- loss of memory
- personality changes
- inability to make basic decisions
- decline in personal hygiene
causes
- old age
- any damage to the brain
- worsens over time
Background
One form of Dementia is Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the united states. One in three seniors die from Alzheimer's. Two-thirds of that one-third are women. It is also one of the only causes of death in the top ten leading deaths that cannot be prevented.
Treatments
1. take vitamins a balance of vitamin B12
2. have surgery to remove brain tumor
3. take medicines to reduce depression
