What the English Language Development Teacher Wants You to Know
My name is Kara and I am an ELL educator, a wife and mother of two children in public schools. I have over 10 years experience teaching English Language Development. (ELL is an acronym for English Language Learner and ELD stands for English Language Development.)
After some time off and a move to Oklahoma from California I was ready to return to the classroom. I accepted a part time position with Jenks Public Schools and later was hired as a full time ELD teacher for the district. At that time the school was experiencing ELL growth. The school blossomed with second language learners, I write blossom because this growth was a positive opportunity for the district. The success of this program should be credited to the tireless efforts shown by teachers like Kathy Rubey. In addition to being an amazing educator she observed that a newly arrived population of Burmese refugees had a need for clothing. What do great teachers like Kathy do? They find a solution and that is exactly what she did when she opened a clothes closet for her ELL students. Her motivation was that kids can’t learn if their basic needs are not being met. Her calm and loving demeanor created a “safe place” for these children to learn and grow. Her service and kindness gained the trust of her students and their families. These students are now becoming English proficient and learning to become productive members of society.
