School Update
These continue to be days where we must attend to the ever changing dynamics involved in operating a school during COVID-19. Since the Governor issued her previous “2 Week Pause” on social activities to slow the spread of COVID-19 in several of our counties, there has been an alarming spike in both cases and COVID-19 hospitalizations across the state. A majority of these cases stem from sporadic community spread.
The Governor’s recent two-week freeze announcement reflects significant measures given rising cases of COVID-19 in communities throughout the state. It will be in effect for two weeks, starting Wednesday, November 18th through Wednesday, December 2nd. The order pertains to personal and business practices, with new restrictions in place to mitigate the spread of the virus. The freeze also reflects a commitment to in-person instruction, with a goal to lower the case count for every county.
Additionally, there is a new TRAVEL ADVISORY for our state. We understand there are a great deal of factors in planning for the holidays, but please keep in mind the risk involved when traveling and the guidance to quarantine should you choose to travel (or be with others from another state). This is a government issued advisory, not an executive oder. At this time, we are not requiring students and staff to quarantine, or report travel, just to take this into consideration out of an abundance of caution. Without taking these precautions, the likelihood of returning to remote learning across the grades increases, so let’s protect this opportunity for our children to go to attend school on-site.
With our state under an additional COVID executive order and the travel advisory, we look at the impact (if any) this has on our plans at NCCS. Schools still have their own set of guidelines, which we continue to follow and adjust our future plans as necessary. To date, we have no known COVID-19 cases among students and staff. In coordination among our administration and school board, we are looking at the health of our school and local community to guide our decisions.
We want to ask that those in our school community commit to the health safety measures, in order that we stay well so that our students are able to continue some level of in-person learning. My own family will celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with those in our household, not extended family. We are choosing to do this so we can assure our family does not become a statistic of COVID spread, and out of love for one another.
Thank you for being thoughtful to what has been outlined and for giving attention to our plans for the coming month. Please note that when adjustments to our plans are necessary, we will communicate in a timely and clear manner.
UPDATED SCHOOL PLANS FOR NOV. 30-DEC. 17:
PreSchool
We wil continue with our program as established, with no expected changes this year.
Elementary Students, Grades K-6
We will continue with on-site, full day, instruction for these students.
DROP-OFF/ PICK-UP Procedures:
On rainy mornings, teachers will be at their exterior classroom entry doors to greet students, rather than on the playground blacktop lined up.
We will continue to offer two days (Mon & Tue) a week of onsite instruction, along with the 3 days of remote instruction, for these students. Students will remain in their scheduled 2 hour block and these will continue as consistent cohorts for the in-person instruction days moving forward. We are not increasing cohort size, rather remaining with approximately10 students per grade level cohort.
DROP-OFF/ PICK-UP Procedures:
For arrival, students enter the gate near the gym. Students will proceed directly to their first class upon arrival.
Please be prompt for arrival, as the gate will close by 8:30 or 12:30. Additionally, please be prompt for pick up at dismissal (10:30 or 2:30), as we are limited in the amount of time students are allowed to be on campus.
