The Grass Valley WAG
Week at a Glance: 2/3 - 2/7
A note from Casey...
As we finish out the last 4 months of school, be sure your mindset is one of openness and learning, as you consider how you might learn from important mistakes and see those mistakes as a gifts, instead of a negative.
Grass Valley at its Finest!
Congrats to our Grass Valley Orators!

Instruction & Assessments
Instruction
Our instructional focus for the 2nd semester will be on tracking student learning through Exit Tickets. During PLC, we will develop exit tickets and find a way to track them whole school. This valuable data collection will inform our work ILT and PLC for the remainder of the year. Our goal is to MAKE IT HAPPEN for ALL of our students in this last half of the year.

Important Reminders - ALL
- Timeliness to Wednesday Staff PD Our staff PD on Wednesdays begins at 1:45p. Please be sure to arrive on time. When a large majority of staff members arrive late, it means we will start/end later.
- Sign in/Sign out Sheet When you sign in at the beginning of the day, be sure you sign in at the time you actually start work, and DON'T pre-sign in for when your work hours begin. You are not expected to begin working before your respective hours, but you should sign in at the time you begin work.
- Staff Room Cleanliness Be sure to remove any food/personal items from the Staff Lounge and fridge before you leave daily. On Fridays, we will clean out anything from the Fridge that is left over.
- Notification When Absent
- Any personal days require notification, in writing, in advance of the requested time off.
- If you determine you need to take a sick day, I ask, as a professional courtesy, that you text (804-922-7728) and/or email ASAP...even if it is 5 in the morning! Our goal is to limit the need to split classes this year, but in order to do so, we need advanced notice about absences in order to do our best to find coverage.
Important Reminders - TEACHERS
- Fire Inspection Please refer to the email from Dec 10.
- Pick up/Drop off to Enrichment Teachers are expected to pick up and drop off their students on time to each Enrichment. When you are not on time, Enrichment teachers do not have the time they need to prepare for their next class.
- Picking up students from Lunch/Recess Be sure that you are on time to pick up students from Lunch/Recess. When teachers are late, we do not have the coverage that we need to assure students are safe.
- Hall Passes Each class has a set of hall passes - please be sure students are using them while in the hallways so we know when/where students should be. If you need new hall passes, please reach out!
- STIP Calendar We will continue to work to have regular coverage by a sub. This Google Calendar will reflect the STIP's Schedule. If you'd like to schedule time with them, please reach out to Casey.
Toolbox
Toolbox is a social-emotional learning curriculum that supports students in building concrete skills to help them self-regulate when escalated. ALL STAFF should be supporting students in learning the tools and building skills to self regulate.
Concept: This tool is about learning to focus on a memory of our safe places, which triggers our body to relax. We ask children to locate both an actual physical place that feels good the them, and to create one in their imaginations that can be visited again and again. We teach them how to "go to" their quiet/safe place in their minds whenever the feel the need for comfort or to reduce stress.
Icon: Ear Muffs - "earmuffs help us shut out the distractions around us and concentrate."
Hand Gesture: place hands over ears while bending head slightly forward. Close eyes and "go to" your quiet/safe place...any time.
Support students in using the Quiet/Safe Place Tool:
- Talk about your own quiet/safe place.
- Ask your students about theirs.
- Ask your children to explain the Quiet/Safe Place Tool tag line, "I remember my quiet place," and the hand gesture that goes with it.
- During times of stress, suggest that your children use their Quiet/Safe Place Tools.
The Grass Valley Way
Grass Valley Way Videos & Community Circle Leadership
As we discussed before break, we will begin facilitating continued promotion of the Grass Valley Way through videos (spearheaded by Culture & Climate and SchoolShine Committees). In connection to that, classes will have the opportunity to lead Community Circle for a week in order to further build student ownership of the Grass Valley Way. Details are coming!
