Upcoming Events Including Volunteer Opportunities!!

Thank you in advance!

On Thursday, September 3 we held our first PTA meeting and were bowled over with the large number of people in attendance. Thank you to all who attended! And thank you to all who wanted to join us but were kept away by other obligations.

At the meeting we discussed many of the upcoming school events and focused on volunteer opportunities. If you would like to get more involved, we would love to have your energy, creativity and enthusiasm at school! Listed below are a variety of volunteer opportunities. There is a contact person for each event. Thank you in advance for your help making LaPerche a great place to go to school!

Before You Can Volunteer!

All school volunteers need to complete a BCI and volunteer training with Mrs. Dorsey before being allowed to volunteer at LaPerche. Forms can be picked up and dropped off at the LaPerche office. You can also email Mrs. Bazinet at and she will send one home with your child.

Forms can be returned directly to LaPerche and we will deliver them to the Smithfield Police Department. You must include a clear copy of your license with your BCI form. You may also drop the form off at the Smithfield Police Department from 7:30-4:00 Monday through Friday. They will not make copies of your license.

Volunteer training takes about 15 minutes and is scheduled for Friday, September 11 at 8:20 a.m. and Tuesday, September 15 at 3:30.

Family Folders--Weekly Communication from LaPerche

Every Thursday, your oldest child will bring home a Family Folder containing information about events and activities at LaPerche and around the town of Smithfield. Every Wednesday at 10:00 a dedicated group of volunteers, come to LaPerche to copy flyers and fill the folders. We are looking for volunteers to help with that process. The time commitment is approximately 2 hours a week from 10:00-12:00 on Wednesdays. If you are interested in helping out please email Sherri Briggs at

FYI--Please remove all flyers from your family folder and return it to school empty. All communication back to school should be sent in your child's homework folder. Also, because we are working to reduce our use of paper, at times there will not be any items for family folders and they will not be sent home.

Open House--Thursday, September 17, 2015--5:30-7:30

During Open House families are invited to LaPerche to visit their child's classroom and meet their child's teachers. This is a drop in event so feel free to stop by anytime between 5:30-7:30. In addition to your child's classroom teacher, please plan to stop by to meet all of our wonderful itinerants including our music, art, physical education and library teachers as well as our reading, speech, special education and school nurse teachers.

During Open House families can also visit our Scholastic Book Fair which will be held in the gym. Are you available to help with the book fair? We need volunteers to set up, sell the books the evening of Open House, and break down the fair. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Sherri Briggs at

Additionally, during Open House our 5th grade class will be hosting a bake sale and "Paw the Door" table! The 5th grade students will be selling $1 "paws" on which individuals can write a welcome back message to staff and students. The paws will be posted on the classroom doors! Thank you in advance for supporting the 5th grade fundraiser.

L.E.A.P.--LaPerche Elementary Afterschool Enrichment Program

In the Fall and again at the end of Winter, LaPerche Elementary offers after school enrichment classes for students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. As the start date gets closer you will receive a L.E.A.P. flyer in family folders providing details about the different programs that are being offered. On the L.E.A.P. days, students are dismissed right to the cafeteria at the bell and families provide a ride home at 4:30.

LaPerche mom, Elisha Geller, runs the program and is looking for volunteers to help check students into the programs at the school dismissal time and to check them out at the end of the program. She also needs a few volunteers to remain in the building while the programs are running. Although she has a few programs lined up for the Fall, we are always looking for new ideas for classes. If you have a special talent you would like to share by teaching a class or would like to volunteer in any capacity please email Elisah at

Outdoor Fun Festival--Friday, September 25--1:30-3:00

LaPerche students work very hard all school year to learn and internalize new information. During the summer, LaPerche students are encouraged to continue to learn through life experiences and summer work! Our Outdoor Fun Festival celebrates all of our students who completed their summer work. In order for your child to attend the Fun Festival he or she must get the Signature Page for Summer Work completed and signed by you. If your child is new to LaPerche, he or she is automatically invited to the festival! The signature page is coming home in family folders on Thursday.

If you would like to volunteer to assist at our Outdoor Fun Festival please email me at Volunteers will be asked to set up stations, monitor the stations and supervise students. Volunteers will also be needed to clean up. Thank you in advance for your assistance!!

Walking Club is About to Begin!

Every Wednesday afternoon you can find LaPerche students happily walking around the baseball field during recess. The students are walking to get healthy and to earn their miles! Would you like to volunteer during walking club? The time commitment is from 12:00-1:30 on Wednesdays. Volunteers hole punch student cards each time they walk a mile and hand out sneaker trinkets for those who have filled a card. Email Kelly Cambio at if you are interested in volunteering.
