ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NEWS!
Bidwell English has been very busy these last 6 weeks. 8th graders have been comparing the elements of two famous speeches made by President Kennedy and President Reagan, both within the topic of the United States space program. Students made connections to Bidwell’s STEAM virtues and the traits shown by inventors and astronauts. Eighth graders are currently writing narrative stories inspired by famous paintings. We are excited to read these creative masterpieces! Next we will be working on scary stories and a biography research paper.
Seventh grade is wrapping up short stories, as well as writing paragraphs using textual evidence to support claims. Students have also written an essay about a defining moment in their lives. They will soon begin the novel, “Touching Spirit Bear,” as well as getting deeper into writing with a five paragraph essay. Working in Google Docs is something else we’ve been focusing on, especially since so many teachers are working with students on Google Classroom.
We can’t believe the first quarter of the year is already over and we look forward to what’s to come!
Our wonderful teachers presenting at the STEM Symposium!
Mr. Battaglia, Mrs. Hansen, Mrs. Myers, and Mrs. Hass all presented an integrated lesson about astronomy that touched on English, leadership, history, science, and art at the STEM Symposium in Anaheim on Monday, October 10th. They were chosen to present out of hundreds of entries. Their presentation included the lessons they have been doing in their classrooms at Bidwell all year. Mr. Battaglia talked about the Lost on the Moon lesson the kids did the first week of school where they had to wisely describe which items they would pack that would be the most worthwhile on a trip to the moon. Mrs. Hansen presented the lesson her students did talking about the STEAM virtues at Bidwell that we want all students to have: Curiosity, Creativity, Problem Solving, Making Friends with Failure, and Imagination. Students made posters listing impressive accomplishments of mankind and goals for mankind in the future. Students read and analyzed two speeches about space travel by John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Students also discussed the elements of good public speaking as they watched the presidents deliver their messages. Mrs. Hass and Mrs. Myers shared their lesson with teachers from all over the state that pioneers have been doing involving space tourism. Students were assigned a planet and then had to create a travel advertisement to get people to want to go there. Students also built space crafts that would travel to their destination and had to explain the reasoning behind their unique design. Finally, an astronomy art project was shared that allowed students to use different types of paint and lids to depict all of the objects in the universe they have been studying. It was an honor for these teachers to represent all of the great things that happen in classrooms at Bidwell!

BLAST NEWS
Things are rolling in the BLAST program. We are excited to have a consistent group of students who are coming every day and using the program to the fullest. We have had to add another teacher to our staff to help give each student more attention and support. Ms. McFarland is taking on this task of having her own homework room and staying to help enrich the kids during activity time. We have had the opportunity to have Dinah our counselor’s intern come and teach our students sign language during activity. It has been a really fun opportunity for our kids. We are also starting up a few chemistry Lab, that our CAVE AIDE from Chico State will be running, we are very excited to see how those experiments go.
During our activity times, we took back our football trophy from Chico Junior High winning 12-7 at home. We split 1-1 victories during our football season and are now in our Dodgeball season. Our first game is Friday at Chico Junior and we are excited to use our new 5 D’s of Dodgeball (dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge).
We are also ramping up for our Fall Carnival on Oct. 31st. We are busy making a lot of poster art and creating carnival booths. We are looking forward to having a fun evening with BLAST families and students. Stay tuned for future BLAST updates!.
