Some News...
Seekonk High School wants to inform all Boys and Girls Soccer student-athletes and their parents that there has been a reappearance of a similar object on one of the fields that caused considerable injury to one of our student-athletes earlier in the season. Please know that once this type of object reappeared on one of the soccer fields the coaching staffs of all soccer programs cleared the field, notified the Athletic Director, who in turn informed the High School Principal.
A thorough investigation of this most recent incident showed the following:
these spikes have not originated from any of Seekonk High School's athletic teams or employees
the problem continues to pose a safety risk to our students
there is no clear explanation as to why the problem still exists
As a result of these findings, Seekonk High School has prohibited any of it's teams from practice and matches on the Cole Street Fields until further notice. It is the intention of Seekonk High School to safeguard each and every student-athlete in our programs. In fact, it is our top priority. Currently, Athletic Director Fred Crippen is rescheduling home games to the football field and practices to fields at the high school that will be made available through scheduling changes.
We ask that you understand some minor inconveniences in scheduling issues as we take every step to make sure our student athletes are performing in the safest environment possible.
World Renown Guest Speaker
We are hosting nationally renown speaker Mr. Chad Hymas on October 18th in our auditorium! He speaks about the topic of inclusion in a real, down to earth manner as he emphasizes his core message of "all means all." This is definitely something you do not want to miss. Feel free to invite friends and family. It is open to the public. Reserve your seat now!

Transportation Update- All students that have completed their bus registration and payment have been issued a student bus pass. The bus pass needs to be shown to the bus driver each day before they board the bus. If your student has not received their bus pass they should let the main office know. A $5 fee will be charged for student that need a replacement bus pass during the year. The transportation policy does not allow students to change buses and ride on a different bus or get off at a location other than their designated stop. The enforcement of the transportation policy serves as a safety measure to provide bus drivers with accurate student rider information.
230 student participated in the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, PSAT, this past Wednesday. Thank you for assisting us in seeing that your student arrived to school on time and prepared for testing. The students did a great job completing the testing.
Reminder that the Seekonk Lions are again sponsoring the Massachusetts Youth Speech Contest this year. Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate. Speak to your student about participating in this opportunity. The topic for the speech this year is What is the Impact of Volunteerism?. Guidelines are available in the guidance office. Students should speak to their guidance counselor or Mrs. Whatley for more information. Encourage your student to participate. Thank you.

Positive Behavior Committee
SHS has many students that are positively contributing to the school atmosphere and we are choosing to recognize these students.
Eight students each month will be receiving certificates for free snacks from the cafeteria after being recognized with Positive Behavior Cards completed by school staff. These cards will be displayed on Character Way at SHS. The September theme was "Starting Strong" and the October theme is "School Pride".
Parents will be receiving phone calls detailing the positive contributions of their children as well!
warrior cries!
Warrior cries are shout outs to staff and students here at Seekonk High School. They are our way of recognizing hard work, creative thinking, and characteristics that make us proud to be part of this community. Please contact Dr. Jones if you wish to give a "warrior cry" to someone!
Mr. Michael Petrucci... "I gave a unit test on chapters 1 - 4 in AP Stats, and I had not taught the topic of "standard deviation" yet (chapter 5). Upon correcting the tests, I noticed that one of my students included an excellent explanation for how unusual a value was because of "how many standard deviations away from the mean it was". I asked her how she knew what standard deviation was, and she responded that she learned it in AP Psychology! So she was able to take what she learned in AP Psych and apply to AP Stats!" - Mrs. Jennifer Angelini
Both of Mrs. Angelini's AP Stats classes... "They were extremely well behaved and attentive when Mrs. Letourneau from Mass Insight came to visit." She was very impressed with them. She commented on the visit in an email, stating; "They were so attentive, asked great questions, gave great answers. What more could you ask for? Do keep pushing them. Be demanding about answers. It pays off at the end." - Mrs. Jennifer Angelini

Internship Opportunity!
Local Professionals Needed to Help Guide Students' Career Exploration!
Can you help a student make more informed choices about their career and college plans? Consider volunteering to be a job shadow host and/or the subject of an informational interview. We will put your name on a list of possible contacts for students interested in doing in depth career exploration.
FYI: Job shadow hosts allow a student to visit you at your place of business to get a first-hand look at the job and have time to ask questions and get expert advice. Informational Interviewees would come to Seekonk High School to meet with a student or small group of students who are interested in knowing more about your line of work. There is no minimum time commitment in either role--this is done at your convenience.
Anyone wishing to be on the list must consent to a CORI (background) check, which can be processed at the Main Office.
Feel free to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and SHS alumni.

Interdisciplinary Project - English/Art
Please Help Bring Author Gareth Hinds to Seekonk High!
The Art & English Departments would like to introduce SHS students to Gareth Hinds, the award-winning author and illustrator of graphic novels based on literary classics. Students will have the unique opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime presentation with this critically-acclaimed illustrator to learn more about the creative process and bridge the gap between art and English.
We need YOUR help to fund this project! Please read about this exciting project and consider helping at the DonorsChoose page: Gareth Hines: Bringing the Classics to Life!. And to get it started, donations will be doubled up to $50 by adding the promo code LIFTOFF at checkout through this Sunday.
Hinds’ work includes Beowulf (which Publisher’s Weekly called a “mixed-media gem”), King Lear (which Booklist named one of the top 10 graphic novels for teens), The Merchant of Venice (which Kirkus called “the standard that all others will strive to meet” for Shakespeare adaptation), The Odyssey (which garnered four-starred reviews and a spot on ten "best of 2010" lists), Romeo and Juliet (which Kirkus called "spellbinding"), and Macbeth (which the New York Times called "stellar" and "a remarkably faithful rendering").
