February 2020/March 2020

A Message from the Principal

Dear Longhorn Families,

Busy Time Of Year – It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through quarter three. Our students have been working hard to meet goals for Math and Reading. Students have started our third round of DAP tests. These assessment results will be analyzed by teachers in grades 3-6 to help with interventions and re-teaching of concepts in both Reading and Math in order to prepare students for the AZMERIT test.

Attendance - Please ensure your child is at school every day. It is critically important as we get close to state testing. If your child is sick and can’t come to school, please contact Ana to report their absence.

Grandparents Breakfast/Rodeo Break - Please invite grandparents to school on Wednesday, February 19th, from 7:00 am – 8:00 am for our grandparent’s breakfast in the cafeteria. This is a great opportunity to spend time their grand kids. Additionally, there will be no school on Rodeo Break. Please enjoy the time off.

Conferences – Third quarter is drawing to a close on Thursday, March 5th. There will be no school on Friday, March 6th. This day is a teacher records day used for preparation of report cards. Join us for conferences on Thursday and Friday, March 12th and 13th. These will be half days with a noon dismissal. Teachers will be contacting you to set up conferences. If you are interested in requesting a conference with your child’s teacher, please call your child’s teacher to schedule one.

Kindergarten Round-Up – Registration for our incoming Kindergartners will take place on Friday, February 28, 2020. Please plan to attend if you have a new child joining us for the Kindergarten next year. Please let neighbors with incoming children know as well. It is very helpful for us to know how many incoming students to expect in August.

AzMERIT – AzMERIT testing for grades 3-6 will begin Monday March 30, 2020 and complete Friday, April 3, 2020.

Spring Break – April 6 - 10, 2020. There will be no school for all students and teachers. I will be at school Monday through Wednesday if you would like to visit.

Teacher Requests - Please be aware that we will soon begin the process of determining classroom placements for the 2020-2021 school year. When making class lists, the teachers make every effort to be sure classes are balanced. If you would like to submit a letter describing what type of educational experience will be best for your child, we will make every effort to honor and respect your perspective. Our goal is to always do what is best for our students. These letters need to be submitted to the current classroom teacher and/or me by Friday, April 3rd, we will begin to create class lists for next year in late April.

As always, it is an honor to serve you as principal of Laguna Elementary School. If you have questions or concerns, please give me a call or come in to talk.

Thank you,

Alan A. Schmidt

If your child arrives at school after 9:00 am, a parent or guardian must sign in the child in the front office. If you need to pick your child up early from school, a parent or guardian must sign him/her out in the front office.

Please call in to excuse absences at 696-8450 or call our Attendance Line 696-4808 (available 24 hours a day). Please leave your child's name, your name, and a brief messages to why your child is absent.

Thank you for understanding!

Every School Day Counts!

We cannot teach a child who does not attend school on a daily basis. It is important for your child to be at school on time daily.

The state of Arizona (A.R.S § 15 – 803) states that a student is habitually truant from school when he/she misses 5 school days.

This year students with 5 unverified absences (no one let the office know the reason for the absence) or excessive absences (10% or 18 days) will require a meeting with the principal to create a plan to increase your child’s attendance.

If your child is ill, has a fever, or is vomiting he/she should stay at home to keep from spreading germs to others.

The 2020 Flowing Wells District Spelling Bee

We are very proud of our 5th and 6th grade Spelling Bee participants. Students started by winning their classroom bee, they then participated in our school wide bee. Those students who placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd for their grade level in our school wide bee moved onto the District Spelling Bee. Dominic Fussell (6), Venice Katz (5), Lucy Robles (5), Marissa Daly (5) and Julio Martinez (6) did a great job representing Laguna at the District Spelling Bee. Congratulations Longhorns!

Lost & Found

Laguna's Lost and Found is overflowing with clothing, coats, gloves, hats, etc. Please take a few minutes check out our collection on the stage. Please don't forget to label your child's belongings, it's the best way to be sure it gets returned quickly. Anything not claimed by the end of each quarter will become part of the nurses's stash. All leftovers will be washed and donated to the Flowing Wells Family Resource Center. Our first donation will be made March 2nd.
