A Note from Dr. Bright & Mr. Norton
We had a fantastic week! Dr. Bright and I noticed our 1st graders working on the skill of visualization. They read a poem called the Green Giant and drew a mental picture while reading!
We noticed our 2nd graders exploring three-digit numbers in Math and learning about Native American Cultures in Social Studies!
As we approach the last full week of January, our school community is preparing for some wonderful celebrations and learning in February, centered around Black History Month! Stay tuned for some opportunities to see our Black History Door decorating event from February 13th - March 7th and our Black History Wax Museum on February 27th!
Peace!

From Nurse Beth: Monthly Health Topic-Mental Health
Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is common at this time of year as we see the dark, cold, dreary days of January and February. Did you know that children can get SAD, too? Here is some information on SAD and how to care for your child if you suspect they have this.

Depression and Anxiety
Mental health has become more of a recent topic with children, as the numbers of children with anxiety and depression has increased the past few years. One thought is that isolation and change in everyday routine from COVID increased these numbers. Many children have fears and worries, and may feel sad and hopeless from time to time. Strong fears may appear at different times during development. For example, toddlers are often very distressed about being away from their parents, even if they are safe and cared for. Although some fears and worries are typical in children, persistent or extreme forms of fear and sadness could be due to anxiety or depression. Learn about anxiety and depression in children. (CDC)
