Carkenord Chronicle
December 2019
Principal's Message
It’s hard to believe that the Christmas season is already here! The Carkenord community continues to support those in need with our Giving Tree. The Giving Tree will be on display outside of our media center. We are collecting NEW hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and underwear. These items will go to families in our community.
Coming up the week of December 2nd is our Santa Shop. Thanks to funds raised for PTC from our Fun Run, the Santa Shop is FREE to our students. Students are able to shop for up to 4 family members living in the home with our students. We are still in need of a few parent volunteers to help with shopping and wrapping of gifts. If you have some availability, please consider donating your time. You can sign up at this web address: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A094BA8A723A4FC1-santa1
Also, PTC is hosting a Cookies with Santa Event on December 11th. Look for an RSVP form to come home soon! All attendees must register in advance to attend! There will be an opportunity to get your child’s picture taken with Santa, decorate a cookie and other activities. It will be a fun time at this open house style event!
We will be celebrating the holidays during the school day on December 19th during our Winter Holiday Rotation Stations. Teachers will be sending home information about volunteers soon!
I look forward to seeing many of you at our various holiday events scheduled this month! I hope you have a wonderful holiday season with your families!
Curriculum Updates
You can now view some of the curriculum your child is learning. Currently, we have 9-12 English, K-8 Math, K-5 Writing, and K-12 Social Studies ready to view. Within the live Atlas site, you can see the essential questions that guide your child’s learning within the unit, the state standards which match the available learning targets, and the overall concepts and vocabulary your child will be experiencing. Throughout the coming years our curriculum will grow and remain transparent through this site. Reading tips for parents
Reading is an essential skill. Parents often ask how to help their child be a better reader, and the truth is, there is no one secret strategy. The research is simple; the more your child reads, the better reader he/she will become. Encourage your child to read—with you, on their own, to the dog, to a sibling, to anyone who will listen.
Below are a few specific things you can do to help your child as he/she reads:
· Encourage your child to re-read favorite books and poems. Repeated readings increase fluency.
· Ask your child to retell the story. Look for important events, details, and characters. For older students (3rd grade and up) try to encourage your child to summarize more and retell less. Summarizing is an important, but challenging skill.
· Be patient when your child is trying to sound out unfamiliar words. Ask questions like: What sound does it start with? What would make sense? Do you see a little word (or word family) inside this word? Are there clues in the picture to help with the unknown word?
· Encourage your child to read with appropriate intonation and phrasing. Model for your child if he/she is struggling with this, then have your child re-read the sentence or phrase.
· Take turns when reading with your child.
· Play word games using word families. Change words like mat to cat to splat.
· Help choose books that are not too difficult. The goal is to have a successful reading experiences.
