1st Amendment
By: Yvette Centeno
First Amendment
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
What the Amendment means to me.
To me the Amendment means that people get freedom of many things. I think it means that people can't tell them their religion or what to say. People can't tell them what to say.
Historical Background
War broke out between Great Britain and the colonies in 1775. In June of 1776 Virginia adapted the Virginia Declaration of rights. This colonial version of The Bill Of Rights listed specific liberties that could not be taken away by government, such as freedom of the press and the freedom to practice whatever religion a person chose.
