Professional Development Goals 2017-18
- To collaborate online and through video with other Vanguards across our network of schools monthly by using the video platform of 'GoToMeeting' and SMORE to support the teachers in your schools with the integration of the iPads and technology
- To continue to coach, support and train Vanguard teacher leaders to turn around and train teachers on the best instructional practices using their iPads in order to produce, reflect and share by showcasing student work and best practices.
- To communicate and collaborate with your instructional team and teachers an understanding of "what good looks like" as we add rigor and move through the SAMR continuum
- To differentiate the information in this SMORE by finding out what works for you and your teachers using Toby and the Education Team as a partner, coach, support, mentor and guide
TODAY'S OBJECTIVES
- Share and reflect evidence from Tobytech Challenge #1
- Introduce and show examples of Clips 2.0 and Screencasting as ways to redefine lessons and assess standards
- Share PD experiences this month and learn from others
- Connect SAMR to rigor, high expectations and the evidence posted on #Slack
CLIPS
Clips, as the name suggests, lets you combine several different "clips" of content, so you can film yourself talking using a Selfie Scene, insert a poster with a voice over, throw in a few photos, and end with a standard video, all of which are automatically merged together into one video.
You can dress up your videos using Live Titles, aka subtitles that are added automatically using transcription, stickers, filters, emoji, and labels that are customizable based on location and time. Clips can be used as a reflection tool, used for standards-based grading evidence and as an assessment
Once finished, the video you created in Clips can be messaged to a contact or saved to the camera roll where it can be shared.
Screen Recording
If you use centers, you could create a screencast with directions for each center, even annotating over an electronic version of a worksheet to explain your expectations. Then, when students arrive at a new center, they can play the screencast and get started. (This is especially good for teachers of preK students or other non-readers.)
You could also post your own screencasts online as homework aids or for students to access in class, when needed. Imagine a student working independently who realized she wasn’t sure what a simile was. She could walk to the computer in the back of the room, pull up the teacher’s simile screencast and be back in her seat within 5 minutes, without ever having to pull the teacher away from a reading group.
APPLE TEACHER EVIDENCE
SAMR
The Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition Model offers a method of seeing how computer technology might impact teaching and learning. It also shows a progression that adopters of educational technology often follow as they progress through teaching and learning with technology.
While one might argue over whether an activity can be defined as one level or another, the important concept to grasp here is the level of student engagement. One might well measure progression along these levels by looking at who is asking the important questions. As one moves along the continuum, computer technology becomes more important in the classroom but at the same time becomes more invisibly woven into the demands of good teaching and learning.
