Administration Corner
As we progress through the year it is important the students are in school and attending all of their classes. Emergencies and illnesses happen, so please provide a doctor or parent note when your student is absent from one or more periods throughout the day. Please see our Attendance FAQ for a quick look at our most frequently asked questions. The Attendance FAQ is also located on the Communications Arts website.

Meet the English Department!
Pictured left to right: Mr. Quincy Scott, Mrs. Julie Davern, Mr. Josh Polinard and Ms. Mari Barrera.
Mr. Josh Polinard--English 1
How long have you been teaching at Comm Arts? This is my fourth year at Comm Arts.
What is your favorite thing or part of English to teach? I love all things Shakespeare!
What is a small piece of advice for our students? Life is a constant learning process. With that in mind, be compassionate towards yourself and others.
A random fact about yourself. I love to draw.
Mr. Quincy Scott--English 2
How long you have been teaching at Comm Arts? I have been teaching at Comm Arts for 17 years (and two months).
What is your favorite thing or part of English to teach? I most enjoy helping my students construct good arguments, and anything to do with poetry. I love analyzing poems, listening to a good poem, and helping my students express themselves with poetry.
What is a small piece of advice for our students? I would advise any student at Comm Arts to just grow a little bit every day. It's easy to put things off and think you can cram it all in when it's test time. But if you can discipline yourself to make a little progress every day, you will see big accomplishments by the end of the school year.
A random fact about yourself. I love The Beatles
Ms. Mari Barrera--English 3 AP/DC
How long you have been teaching at Comm Arts? This is my first year at CAHS.
What is your favorite thing or part of English to teach? I love teaching the writing process, it makes me excited to see students improve throughout the year, especially when they notice, too!
What is a small piece of advice for our students? It's OK to make mistakes, whether in life or in writing, just take a breath and try again.
A random fact about yourself. I'm originally from Corpus Christi, lived in Dallas and Austin, but came back to San Antonio (where I went to college at St. Mary's) because I loved it so much! It's home.
Mrs. Julie Davern--English 4 AP/DC
How long you have been teaching at Comm Arts? This is my 8th year at CommArts
What is your favorite thing or part of English to teach? I love literature and hope to inspire my students to find an appreciation for what an author does when he writes.
What is a small piece of advice for our students? To be truly successful in English, you have to read your texts. Doing so will help prepare you for any course of study and career field.
A random fact about yourself. I lived in Dublin, Ireland for three years, learned a little Gaelic, and participated in some Irish dancing.
