January 29, 2021
Dear KHS Families:
Happy New Year! We hope that January has provided a good start for fresh beginnings. January is traditionally the month we celebrate School Board Appreciation Month. We are thankful for the countless hours they graciously donate in order to help our school district experience success. The decisions they make today, ensure a positive future for our students and community. If you see one of these seven leaders at one of our district events, please share thanks for their selfless service.
As we move into February, our students are involved in a multitude of activities and are making the final push before EOC's and AP testing later this spring. We wish all of them the best of luck in all of their chosen endeavors. It's important that you know the hard work and love you are pouring into your children at home is reflected each day at school. Parenting is hard work, and we recognize your dedication. Our staff has the opportunity to witness your hard work exemplified through the actions of our young men and women every day.
It was approximately one year ago that I started hearing about COVID and the impact it was making on the other side of the globe. In August, we were hopeful that it would no longer negatively impact school by the time January arrived. Yet, even today we are still fighting this global pandemic. With all the disruptions of the year involving quarantine, remote learning, and in-person learning, our stakeholders have been champions. Our students and staff have adjusted to a blended model of learning and we are so thankful for their perseverance and grit. Each day has provided a new opportunity for us to learn something new about the virus, testing, and vaccines; as well as their impact on learning. We appreciate your patience during this time, as there have been several adjustments that have been made during the journey.
The spring semester is always full steam ahead and 2021 is no different. This newsletter contains information of important dates you want to save to your calendar. Hopefully these events will give our students something to look forward to, as we seek some sort of normalcy during this pandemic. We still have a lot of school ahead of us, filled with more academic, athletic, fine arts, and CTE events.
Seniors and parents of seniors, we have not forgotten about you. We have secured Denton Bible Church for this year's graduation. Please save Thursday, May 27th at 2:00 pm for this joyous event. Also, we will have a rehearsal at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 26th. (If any of these events have to be adjusted, we will notify you as soon as possible.) As soon as we have other senior dates finalized, we will share those as well. Mrs. Orsi and the Prom committee have been working hard to ensure a memorable prom for our Junior and Senior class. We realize our Seniors missed out on prom last year, and are striving to make sure they have one to remember this year.
The KHS faculty and staff members are looking forward to great accomplishments in 2021. We appreciate your support, and we are committed to tackling future challenges as a team. As partners in your child’s education, please do not hesitate to contact us if we can ever be of service to you. Krum is a special place because of invested parents, students, teachers, staff and community members who work together for student success.
Sincerely yours,
Michelle Pieniazek

Krum Education Foundation Scholarships!!! DEADLINE FEBRUARY 5, 2021
Krum Education Foundation Scholarships!!! DEADLINE FEBRUARY 5, 2021
Please review the KEF Scholarship Summary Guide below to better understand all of the scholarships available to you from the Krum Education Foundation. Only Krum High School seniors are eligible to earn these scholarships.
This year the KEF consolidated the scholarship applications into a single application for all scholarships. You still need to complete an essay for EACH scholarship, but having one application form for multiple scholarships will make it even easier for you to apply.
Please don't miss this opportunity to earn money that you will need in the near future as you begin your post-secondary paths.
The deadline to apply for the KEF scholarships is February 5, 2021 (the first Friday in February). You can turn your application packet to the KHS Counseling office or mail the application (with all needed documents and essays) to the address listed on the application form.
Here is a link to the scholarship forms: https://www.krumisdeducationfoundation.org/application-forms
National Cyber Scholarship Foundation
The program is open to all Texas students in grades 9–12. Participating students and their teachers do not need knowledge or experience in information technology or cybersecurity to take part, and the program is free for schools and students alike. As a result of the initiative’s efforts last year, 2,294 students from Texas high schools participated, and 199 succeeded in reaching the national finals.
Participating students will have the opportunity to win prizes and recognition for their schools and scholarships for themselves. The National Cyber Scholarship Foundation anticipates awarding scholarships worth a total of $2 million for use at any accredited college to 600 high-scoring students across the nation who participate in the competition in 2021. Students can compete for state-specific and community-specific prizes as well as national championship status. There will also be incentives for Texas high schools to encourage more students to reach the qualifying level in the CyberStart Game, including exclusive access to additional cybersecurity education resources and recognized cyber skills mastery badges for their students.
Complete details may be found at www.cyberstartamerica.org. The CyberStart Game concludes on April 4, 2021. Students may continue to register so long as they reach the National Cyber Scholarship Competition qualifying level in the Game by the cut-off date of March 8, 2021. Students will be informed that they qualify for the CyberStart National Scholarship Challenge Round as soon as they have achieved sufficient progress, but they are allowed to continue playing and learning in order to build more skills that will be useful to them in the National Scholarship Challenge. To see the types of challenges students will face in the games, visit https://go.cyberstart.com.

ATTENTION JUNIORS - COLLEGE BOARD OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS
The College Board Opportunity Scholarships program is open for class of 2022 students. The program lays out six simple steps that all students can take to get to college. For each step that a student completes, they’ll earn a chance at a $500 scholarship. When a student completes all six, they’ll earn a chance at $40,000 for their college education.
•
More than 7,000 students will earn a scholarship each year, nearly double the number of winners recognized in previous years.
•
At least half of all the scholarships—over $2 million each year—are awarded to students whose families earn less than $60,000 per year.
We encourage you to share this information with your counselors and juniors and urge your students to sign up for the program. Their first step is to make a starter list of six colleges they’re interested in. Just by making that list, they earn a chance for a $500 scholarship.
Educators can take the College Board Opportunity Scholarships pledge. When you sign up for the pledge, you’ll receive a free digital toolkit as well as monthly reminders and resources.
Sincerely,
College Board
