VCAN Conference
~ Call for Session Proposals ~
VirginiaCAN is currently accepting session proposals for the annual conference scheduled for December 11–13, 2017 at the Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center.
Submit proposals by September 19th by completing the form at https://goo.gl/forms/xE9aDz7UqsBCwxjZ2. Please review the information below, before submitting. And feel free to share this opportunity with others who may be interested.
Proposal Development and Submission Guidance
VCAN is encouraging proposals for innovative workshop sessions that emphasize participation and contribute to the delivery of an informative and exciting conference experience. For ideas for interactive sessions, click here. We will give priority to proposals with a format that allows the audience to connect with and learn about important college access and success topics in a new way. Preference will also be given to sessions that have never been presented at the VirginiaCAN conference. Please be sure to notify all presenters included in your proposal prior to submitting.
Presentation Formats
Sessions will be 75 minutes each. Your session should consist of no more than 75% lecture and include interactive learning. Formats may include traditional styles such as panel presentations, lectures with Q&A, roundtables, demos, and hands-on workshops.
A new presentation format option this year is 7-14-28! Today’s culture demands variety and concise information that can be processed quickly. In response, we are introducing the 7-14-28 alternative presentation format. The 7-14-28 presentation style is a rapid-fire showcase of ideas, innovations, and/or theories.
Speakers have:
7-minutes to talk/present their information,
14 slide number restriction, and a
28-point font size minimum for any text.
7-14-28 allows speakers to focus on the essentials of their subject, while offering an audience the chance to enjoy multiple presentations in one sitting. Presentations on similar or related topics will be grouped together to fill one 75-minute concurrent session. Time for questions and answers will also be allotted. We are hoping for at least 6 proposals to make this format a go this year! Take the challenge and help us provide attendees with an alternative learning format. Suggested topics for this format include Pathways to Higher Education or Partnerships for Success.
Session Topics
VirginiaCAN is looking for sessions to cover a variety of topics such as college awareness and readiness, college affordability, partnerships for success, rural/urban initiatives, parent engagement, equity, special populations, 21st century skills, STEM programs, financial aid and literacy, research/data/evaluation, student success in postsecondary education and pathways to higher education/training. Presenters can share best practices, programs, tools and resources, research, etc.
Selection Notification
The conference committee will review all proposals and send selection notifications via email to primary contacts shortly after the submission deadline. Preference will be given to sessions that have never been presented at the VirginiaCAN conference and or sessions that utilize the new 7-14-28 presentation format described above.
Conference Registration
Presenters are not required to register for the conference unless they wish to attend other sessions, including keynotes, breakouts, and meals. Conference registration will open online on September 5. Additional conference and registration information will be posted at www.virginiacan.org, as available.
For questions, email virginiacan@googlegroups.com.

Elementary News
Tolbert Elementary: I wanted to share an activity I did yesterday at Open House that was really fun at Tolbert. We are focusing on kindness this year. At open house, I set up a photo booth station where I had students and staff members write ways to show kindness to make people smile. I then took their pictures and printed and hung the pictures on the wall. I now have over 100 pictures hanging up! I sent you a few pictures of some student examples and a picture of one section of the display hanging on the wall.
I hope this is something you can use, it was a really fun way to greet the students and parents at open house.-Michelle
Virtual Loudoun- Cynthia Fillman
Virtual Loudoun had a very successful 10-week Summer Term, serving 1500 students. We’ll begin our 15-week Fall/Winter Term 1 on September 4th with over 600 students participating in virtual courses. That is more than a 100% increase from the 2016 Fall/Winter Term 1! We anticipate serving 3000+ students throughout our three terms this school year. The last day to drop a virtual course in Term 1 without grade penalty is Friday, November 17th. The VL drop period has been expanded beyond the previous 4-week window to align with the updated LCPS School Board Policy for dropping/withdrawing from a course. Any course dropped for Term 1 beyond November 17 will remain within a student’s course history, show in the transcript as “WF” and be calculated in with the cumulative GPA.
New this fall are the addition of two virtual courses: Algebra 2/Trig (an honors course) and the semester Psychology course. You can see the full list of courses available through Virtual Loudoun from our website by hovering over “Courses” from the top navigation and selecting your desired content area.
If you have a student enrolled in a virtual HPE course and your student is needing to borrow an activity tracker, if there are no available devices within your department to lend out, please utilize the “Activity Band Request” form found on the VL website from “Requests” in top navigation: https://www.lcps.org/domain/21532.
High schools are limited to 100 seats for virtual courses total for Terms 1 and 2 (Virtual Virginia courses do NOT count in this total), and Counseling Departments should track their numbers so that they are aware of how many remaining seats you’ll have for the Winter/Spring Term 2 session which will begin January 29, 2018 (registration will be open December 1 to January 12).
As always, if you have any questions about Virtual Loudoun, please reach out to the VL School Counselor Cynthia Fillman (direct phone extension: 26518): Cynthia.Fillman@lcps.org, or Virtual Loudoun Supervisor Stacie Ahrens-Mininberg: Stacie.AhrensMininberg@lcps.org. We look forward to working with you this school year!
