21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
Well, the Brickies didn't exactly get much time off for the holiday break as girls & boys basketball, swimming & diving, wrestling and gymnastics were all in the gym/pool hard at WORK WORK WORK gearing up for an exciting winter sports season! The sports schedule was pretty full (... like our bellies) over break with girls basketball in action twice and boys & girls swimming making a splash against Valpo!
A Fox Sports TRADITION is to share turkey legs with the winners on THANKSGIVING ... so I thought we'd put our own BricksCenter spin on it by handing out turkey legs for special/unique accomplishments by our student-athletes ... and we are fortunate enough to have the legendary John Madden here to deliver the goods!
(John Madden voice) BOOM - you see right here ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Girls
Coming off victories over Wheeler and Portage, the Lady Brickies were up against one of the top teams in all of NWI on Saturday. Even with a lot of returning letter-winners, experience in BIG meets is something that is always valuable and this was a BIG one! Hobart started HOT with victories in both the 200 Medley Relay and 200-yd Freestyle, but the Lady Vikes would fight back and earn 1st place in 8 of the 12 events on the day. The BIGGEST highlight of the day was certainly junior PHENOM Emma Wright setting a NEW SCHOOL RECORD in the 100-yd Backstroke!
Overall, the Lady Brickies swam well as Wright (200-yd Free + 100-yd Back) and junior teammate Delaney O'Brien (50-yd Free + 100-yd Free) were both DOUBLE WINNERS in individual events; however, Valparaiso's depth was too much to overcome as Hobart lost a tough one 113-73. Senior Becky Lozano placed 2nd in the 100-yd Fly and junior Ana Tepavcevich finished 2nd in the 100-yd Breast.
In diving, junior Alivia Ahner narrowly missed out on earning the "W" over a really good Valpo duo, placing 3rd overall. Sophomore Autumn Turley and freshman Gabby Tomich each obtained their highest 6-dive scores of the season!
Here are some other results from Saturday's meet:
200 Medley Relay - 1st = junior Emma Wright, junior Ana Tepavcevich, senior Becky Lozano & junior Delaney O'Brien
200 Free - 1st = Wright, 5th = junior Julie Hunt

500 Free - 4th = Tepavcevich, 5th = Sanchez
200 Free Relay - 2nd = Solivais, Chavez, Hunt, & Sanchez
100 Back - 1st = Wright (NEW SCHOOL RECORD), 5th = Ahner
100 Breast - 2nd = Tepavcevich, 5th = sophomore Bridget Chavez
400 Free Relay - 2nd = O'Brien, Lozano, Tepavcevich, Wright
Boys
The Hobart boys were competing in their 1st meet of the year and were a bit short-handed thanks to the holiday weekend. Still, the Brickies boast a slew of underclassmen and these guys looked GOOD out of the blocks!
The top highlight of the day on the boys side was certainly super sophomore Ethan Ferba in diving as he held his own against the #3-ranked diver in the state of Indiana, placed 2nd overall and bested his score from last year's opening meet by a whopping 46 points! Sophomore Jeydan Fifer brought home a pair of 2nd place finishes in the 50 & 100-yd Freestyle races, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings sunk the Brickies 141-38.
Here are some other results from Saturday's meet:
200 Free - 4th = senior Zach Gubricky, 5th = freshman Owen Finch
200 IM - 4th = sophomore Nathaniel Mamushe
50 Free - 2nd = sophomore Jeydan Fifer, 5th = sophomore Ivan Balboa
Diving - 2nd - sophomore Ethan Ferba

500 Free - 4th = freshman Noal Bailey
200 Free Relay - 2nd = Mamushe, Finch, Balboa & Fifer

Junior Emma Wright SHATTERS her own school record in the 100-yd backstroke by 3 seconds! BOOM - TURKEY LEG!!
Basketball
On Tuesday, Hobart played host to LaCrosse High School looking to continue their hot start to the season. Unfortunately, the Lady Tigers brought a lid with them to cover up the hoop and help on the defensive end. The Lady Brickies played their collective butts off for 32 minutes, but just couldn't ever get anything going on the offensive end. LaCrosse led 14-8 after 1 quarter of play and 19-12 at the half. Hobart tried time and again to rally against the taller Tigers players, but never could put together consecutive possessions where the ball found the bottom of the net. Consequently, a run to get it close never materialized and the Lady Brickies lost a tough one 44-30.
Saturday afternoon, our girls were back in action on the road against Calumet hoping to bounce back from Tuesday's loss at home. The play was even early on as each team traded baskets in the 1st quarter and Calumet led 12-11 after 8 minutes. The Lady Brickies LOCKED DOWN on the D-D-D-DEFENSIVE end and continued to BATTLE for buckets on offense, clawing their way to a 23-21 halftime lead! The 3rd quarter offered more of the same back-and-forth action with Hobart outscoring the Lady Warriors 11-9 to extend the Brickie lead to 4 points going into the 4th!
80's R&B international pop star Billy Ocean said it best in the title of his 1985 hit "When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going"! With 8 minutes left to play and the final result still in doubt, the Hobart Lady Brickies GOT TOUGH and GOT GOING to the tune of a 13-6 run to end the game and secure a HARD FOUGHT 47-36 road victory!! Junior forward Lexi Williams led all scorers with 14 points ... BOOM TURKEY LEG!! Senior Grace Nestich added 13 to help the Lady Brickies stay UNDEFEATED on the road this year!
After 7 games, Hobart is 5-2 and has already won more contests than in each of the last two seasons! No rest for the weary as the Lady Brickies are back at it this week with two more TOUGH road games @ Portage (Tuesday) and @ Munster (Friday). LET'S GO GIRLS!!

WE ARE HOBART
Turning the lights on at The Brickyard was a small gesture, but one that was shared at countless schools throughout Indiana to show support for Coach Bowsman's family, the West Washington students & faculty, and the entire Wabash Valley community.
We all get caught up in the day-to-day grind of our lives ... taking too much for granted.
Hopefully, this holiday weekend offered an opportunity for everyone to take a little closer look at all there is to be THANKFUL for ... so many blessings to appreciate and celebrate.
