Morning Caravan
Goodrich Area Schools - ALICE Training - PARENT NIGHT
In cooperation with the Genesee County Sheriff's Department and Deputy Ryan Ulshafer, we will host an ALICE Program Parent Information Night, on Wednesday, October 10, in the Raymond C. Green Performing Arts Center, from 6:30 - 7:15 p.m., for parents of students in grades Kindergarten - 5th. Deputy Ulshafer and school officials will present information that we are using to prepare our students and staff, in the event of an active intruder or other emergency situation.
ALICE, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate, is a safety response program that has been adopted by Goodrich Area Schools, along with the Genesee Intermediate School District and many of the districts in our county.
As a district we take our role of keeping your student as safe as possible, very seriously. Please plan to join us if you can.
USING KIND WORDS
This week students watched a “Millerschin’s Moment” (where Mrs. Millerschin does an announcement or story for the whole school and teachers can show it from the shared drive). The topic was using kind words. The students were told that using the words “kill”, “gun” or “knife” at school scares others and those words are not allowed at school. Threats were also discussed; you are not allowed to tell someone you are going to hit, kill or hurt them – that is a threat. Threats to others are not allowed. The discussion was ended with explaining that students do not have to be everyone’s best friend but we use kind words to everyone at Reid Elementary. Please know that the safety and education of all students is our number one priority. This includes the belief that we need to help all children understand appropriate behavior while maintaining a strong and supportive environment where students are loving and learning every day. That’s our Leadership Pledge we say every day: “I Love, I Learn, I Listen”.
Reid Picture Retake Day - 10/18
HALLOWEEN FUN!
It is that spooky, candy filled time of year again – Halloween! To keep all our parents informed of the day’s events, here are a few key pieces of information.
Remember that the school day is a half-day on October 31, 2018.
School will dismiss at 12:20 pm.
Parties: 9-10, Parade: 10-10:45, Lunch period for students: Kdg: 11 and 1st: 11:30 .
Please watch for information from your child’s teacher about class room parties.
Due to space constraints in the classroom and in order to focus on our Reid students, we ask that parents leave siblings at home during the parties. We appreciate your understanding with this request.
If you are unable to attend without additional children, we encourage you to come just for the costume parade. The parade is currently scheduled for 10:00 am. If the weather permits, we will parade down the sidewalk on Seneca St. to Hegel Rd. We will then turn left and parade down Hegel Rd to Clarence St. We will then turn left again and proceed to Erie St. back to Seneca and to the school. You are welcome to line up to watch the parade go by and enjoy seeing all of the children’s wonderful costumes. If it is raining, we will have the parade in the building and you are invited to join us in the gym to watch the parade there.
We know what a big deal it is to choose just the right costume and our staff is just as excited to see them as your child is to make that final choice. There are however, some school guidelines for costumes that must be followed:
- Costumes should be age appropriate
- No weapons (swords, guns, light sabers, etc.)
- No blood or gore
- No full face masks
Also, students can wear their costume to school. There will also be time to change prior to the parade.
For anyone who plans on joining us on that day, please make sure you have your I-Chat form in to the office no later than Wednesday, 10/24. You will not be allowed into the building without one. You can download it from the Goodrich website or can pick one up at the office. If you want to take your child home with you after the classroom party, please sign your child out in his or her classroom on the teacher’s sign-out sheet. From the Literacy Specialist - Mrs. Semrau
Now that we’ve been at school for a month, don’t forget to keep, or begin, that bedtime reading habit you had when your kids were smaller. Our Reid students aren’t too old for their beloved family read-alouds. According to research, reading aloud to your child may be more important than ever!
Now that we teachers spend our days teaching them the mechanics of letters, sounds and “thinking what makes sense” on each page of their reading books, they need to stay motivated. Motivation is tough when learning to read can be just plain hard work! That’s why the read-aloud habit is so important—it reminds them that books are magical and fun. Books can still be a cozy activity at the end of a busy day full of routine.
If you need more reasons, research also says reading aloud to your child helps with:
- Vocabulary
- Motivation
- Life-long love of reading
- Fluency and phrasing
- Higher test scores
- Improved behavior
Reading aloud is one area in education that has never had a negative affect for any child in any area. It’s really the easiest thing to suggest, and the most pleasant thing for the end of a busy day!
SAVE THE DATE
Did you know?
This year we made a change at the elementary level to have three marking periods. Report cards will be sent home three times during the school year (December, March and June). Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held in December and April. Please know that if at any time you have questions or concerns about your child’s progress, teachers are available for phone calls, emails or an in person meeting. Having these three marking periods allows us to maximize our teaching time and keeps us in line with required state assessment schedules. The elementary calendar also aligns with our three semesters and meets the needs of our young learners.
IChats - background check - DEADLINE
Forms are not processed at the school, so we must have at least a 4 day process window in order to have them cleared.
Fire hall trips and Halloween are right around the corner, so make sure you and your family members are set to attend.
