National Prevention Week 2019
Preventing Opioid and Other Prescription Drug Misuse
This Year's Theme: How Will You Inspire Change?
Monday's Spotlight: Prescription Drug and Opioid Awareness
See graph below for Michigan's escalating number of opioid-related deaths. Opioids include both illegal drugs, such as heroin, and prescription pain medicine.
What One Action Can You Take to Inspire Change?
Rx Take-Back Made Easier
If you don't have any drugs to take back, remind a friend, co-worker or a relative today about the importance of Rx disposal.
We all need to help prevent controlled or uncontrolled prescriptions getting into the wrong hands. Help protect our young people.
According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) about 80% of heroin users started out using prescription opioids. NIDA reports young adults between 18 and 25 are the largest group misusing prescription drugs including opioids.
Help for People with Chronic Pain
There are safer alternatives to opioids for chronic pain. Chronic Pain PATH is a FREE six-week workshop conducted in 2 ½ hour sessions in community settings.
Research studies found that, on average, people who have participated in the program have more energy, less pain, less dependence on others, improved mental health, are more involved in everyday activities, and are more satisfied with their lives compared to those who have not taken the program.
Click here for the next free Chronic Pain PATH class near you. There is one starting in June in Charlotte.
If you don't need the class, reach out to one person you know who might benefit and/or share this information with your health care provider.
Free Narcan for Community Groups
Did you know schools, YMCA's and libraries can qualify to receive free Narcan® Nasal Spray and training to help in the event of an opioid overdose? To learn how to apply, click here.
NARCAN® (naloxone HCl) Nasal Spray is an easy-to-use prescription medicine used for the treatment of an opioid emergency such as an overdose or a possible opioid overdose.
High schools, colleges and universities, in addition to other organizations, can play a crucial role in changing the course of the opioid overdose epidemic. Plan for an opioid overdose emergency by stocking NARCAN® Nasal Spray.
If you work for or know someone who works for a public library, YMCA, high school or college, please share this life-saving information with them.
