Important Reminder: ASVAB Assessment

Seniors and Juniors:

This Thursday, January 12th is the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) assessment. If you have not met the graduation requirement of passing the Smarter Balanced Assessments in both Math and English-Language Arts, you can take the ASVAB and pass with 31 out of 100 to meet an alternative to the SBA requirement.

Reservations with Counselor Christy are required in order for the Military to prepare the testing materials. This will be the only opportunity you will have to take the ASVAB with LHHS this year. The ASVAB assesses English, Math, Science and some career competencies. It helps determine what career fields you could be skilled in.

Senior Meeting - Friday

This Friday, January 13th, there is an important senior meeting during advisory (9:28 – 10:00 AM). Through this leadership team you will have the opportunity to work alongside Superintendent Dr. Rumbaugh and other district leaders to help shape the future of Stanwood-Camano schools. You will also develop your leadership, advocacy, and collaboration skills alongside a diverse community of peers. The team meets at the District office once a month.

The goal

Students working directly with the Superintendent, bringing the student voice to district level decision-making.

The work

Providing input on various topics including but not limited to school community, curriculum, school safety, social justice and opportunities for students.

The team

About 8-10 students from Stanwood High and about 4-6 students from Lincoln Hill High who represent and reflect the diversity of the district.

Advisory Lesson Last Friday

Last Friday during advisory, students had time to review missing assignments in their classes and make a plan on what assignments they would complete and turn in this week. Students also learned about Unstuck Strategies they can use in class in order to support them in their learning.

Monitoring Grades and Missing Assignments:

As mentioned above, students were given time to review their grades in Skyward and identify missing assignments they need to complete and turn in. Students were given a handout to write down their plan and will show this to their advisory teacher next week to show what was accomplished from the plan.

Parents/guardians, please ask your student to show you their Missing Assignment Plan so you can support them in completing their missing assignments before the end of 1st semester on Friday, January 27th. As a reminder, students can arrange for additional time and support from their teacher. Please refer to the Student Support section below in this newsletter for days of the week students can stay after school for additional support. (NOTE: If a specific day/time does not work in the student's schedule based on the teacher schedule below, please contact the teacher to find another day/time that will work).

REMINDER: Partnering in Student Success

Supporting Student Success:

Our teachers work hard to support students academically everyday. Partnering with students and parents/guardians in this work is very important. This is our last week before winter break and five school weeks before the end of 1st semester. Supporting students in staying caught up on their work and turning in any missing assignments is very important not only for student learning, but also in maintaining grades that will earn credits towards graduation.

Below are some steps you can take at home to support students academically:

  • Review any missing assignments with your student by having your student login to their Skyward account. Locate the missing work and support your student in completing it. You may reach out to teachers with any questions you have.

  • Review assignments with low scores and have students ask their teachers how they can redo an assignment or retake an assessment to show their new learning to earn a better grade.

  • Arrange a time for students to get additional time and support from their teacher. Please refer to the Student Support section below in this newsletter for days of the week students can stay after school for additional support. (NOTE: If a specific day/time does not work in the student's schedule based on the teacher schedule below, please contact the teacher to find another day/time that will work).

We see our students working hard everyday and we are here to support them in their learning. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our teachers if you have any question. Teacher contact information can be found below.

Teacher Contact Information

We are here to support every student in their learning. Below are teachers' contact information if you need to ask any questions or need assistance. REMINDER: Credit Retrieval

REMINDER: INCLEMENT WEATHER

As the weather forecasts indicate, we may see cold weather this winter. Our Superintendent, Dr. Rumbaugh, has shared with everyone how we make the determination to delay or close schools due to ice, snow, flooding, etc.

  • Safety first! We consider the safety of our children on buses, our student drivers, families driving and walking to school, and the safety of our staff, especially our bus drivers.

  • We monitor weather patterns using multiple methods 24/7. In particular, we use a tool called Accuweather that is specifically designed to support school districts in looking ahead at weather patterns.

  • When there is a concern about school starting on time, our staff begins driving the roads throughout the district as early as 2 a.m. We take photos, check road conditions, monitor traffic, look for hazards, etc. We typically drive the roads multiple times in the early morning to determine if conditions are improving, worsening, or staying the same.

  • We strive to decide about the school day by 5 a.m. Once the decision is made, we begin communicating with families and staff. We communicate through:

    • Autodialer (via School Messenger)

    • Email (via School Messenger)

    • Website

    • Flash Alert

Predicting the weather is a challenge, and our primary goal is to ensure that the roads are safe, our campuses are easy to navigate, and the weather does not impede a safe school day.
